FPN Notepad logo?

Recommended Posts

well, it seems we have a lot of interest in an FPN notepad. So here is one thread to try to nail down the details.

What I think most of us would like is a simple but attractive logo. There are different ways to go about it.

1) It can be commissioned by an on-line logo company

2) it can be commissioned by an FPNer who is so inclined

3) it can be volunteered by an FPNer who is so inclined.

We also have to have somewhat of an idea of what we want in terms of style. A small corner logo, an across the top logo with line, etc. Pen theme? Ink theme?

Input is requested and much appreciated.

Personally, pen AND INK theme!

corner or across the top are fine.

More idea sources the better I think...

Well, for the pads themselves, i'm sure we can incorporate the URL into the graphic. It's a rather long URL for use within the logo I imagine.

There's a possibility that this logo would be incorporated into other products at some point. One suggestion was CafePress which will print items on demand such as t-shirts and so on. That's something I think that needs to be considered in the design.

The URL wouldn't necessarily need to be incorporated into the logo design. Given it's length, I'd actually recommend against it and work for a cleaner logo. The URL should be on the pad, though. A logo could be used in a variety of ways. It could be centered on the top, to the left on the top, to the left or right on the bottom, ghosted in as a larger graphic on the pad, etc. The URL could then be placed in relation to the logo (next to it, below it, above it...) or it could be placed along the bottom of the page as a footer with the logo in some other position.

Just a few thoughts...

yeah - that's what I was trying to say, Mark. Thanks for clarifying.

I agree with Mark! :)

As for who will do the actual design, I am in the dark about that...

Take your most classic FP, create a hand drawn silhouette with the cap posted. Should not be machine perfect, should be well drawn by hand. Clip up, laid across the top with the nib on the right. Should cover 60% of the paper width, centered along the top.

FPN could be "engraved" on the pen.

Small thin line, perfectly straight, beneath the pen to separate it from the writing. Line should only be 40% of paper width or so... Small font at the bottom, 60-40% of paper width, with the website URL in italics, centered also. Font should be an old script.

Cream colored paper with Sepia ink. I'd like it to feel very old...

Just my two cents, worth everything you paid. :D

just to clarify - the paper is white - I'm not sure about the brightness but would guess it is about 92. Jimmy may be able to clarify that.

I don't know if he has access to, or would want to, use a cream colored paper. For an idea of the sort of pads he makes, check out Richard Binder's Accessories page.

I like that idea Dip Head. I'd vote for copperplate as the "old script"

Elaine

I agree with Elaine and DipHead!

(it's so easy for me to choose when someone else does all the thinking... )

As for which "classic" FP to have on the pad....Hmmm, we could do something like a Parker Duofold 'Big Red' or a vintage Sheaffer Balance or a Waterman 52 BHR pen or a Wahl-Eversharp Doric (from the "Big 4" vintage pen companies).... or something entirely different....

well, I like the idea for a notepad. The problem is, as a "logo" it lacks flexibility for use on other items if we decide to do something else later. Lapel Pins for example. Maybe that shouldn't be a deciding factor but I want to point it out.

my first thought was a stylized nib with FPN "engraved" on it with some simple scrollwork. As if there was a nib brand called FPN.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
