How old is this ink?

Hi guys. I found this bottle of Pelikan ink at an old stationery shop near my parent's place. It looks like this (Pic taken from Ink Bottles site).

This is the first time I've seen this design. The box has Gunther Wagner written on it, and the bottle has a large 76 inscribed on the bottom.

Seeing how the paper has yellowed, I'd say at least 30 years.

The sword is mightier than the pen. However, swords are now obsolete whereas pens are not.

... or even more, I would say it is from the seventies (because I've got a pelikan bottle from the 80' and it has already a the modern look)

My take is late 70s or 80s. I have a 60s bottle and it's cylindrical.

They still have that shape in production btw.

Wow! 30 year old ink... is it still usable? Also, what did it cost you? Was it sold at a discount? I just paid 5.50 USD

for a 1oz bottle of Pelikan Violet in NYC at the ftn pen hospital...

Its still usable, and cost the same as new bottles. Here in Singapore pelikan ink is cheap, approx 2 USD each.

When I bought an old German piston filler from Germany a few months ago the seller also sent me an identical bottle of royal blue ink. The box has 180 penciled on the top. I assume that means 1.80 deutschmark?

Anyone has ever had fading problems with Pel blue?

I have 2 bottles of pel blue. The first one, at least 20 years old, fades almost instantly and within days is almost unreadable. The second, less than a year old, fades within 3 months. None of this experienced with Parker, Pelikan or Waterman Black, Waterman Blue-black, Aurora Blue

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
