This should probably be in the MB forum, but I wanted responses from people other than MB lovers. :happyberet:

SHUT IT DOWN! -- Liz Lemon

Do you mean the poll?  Or the topic?

I didn't want to start a 'war'...

Um... PianoMan14, you're new here, so let me tell you that I made the above comment in fun.

FWIW, there are numerous threads about whether or not Montblanc pens are worth the price. Granted, yours has a poll attached, but it'll still be the same-old, same-old.

Just sayin'.

No one ever wants to start a war. Anyone who's been around here for a while knows what the button-pushing topics are: Where's the Lamy forum? Are Montblancs worth the money? Are Noodler's inks safe?

They just keep getting repeated

Ad nauseam.

Sorry about that...

I should have done a good thorough search before I posted.

I also should know when not to take things literally.

Oh well, I guess I'll know not to do this in the future. Thank you for clarifying what you meant.

If the moderators feel it would be the right thing to do, I would be perfectly happy for this topic to be deleted; I don't want to be responsible for a storm of conflicting replies.

*sigh*

A legitimate question, but as with so many things here, it's just so subjecive, personal and complicated. P.S did you see the MB Youtube Video posted yesterday ? I'm not self indulgent about MB's in general but you have to see that one. Credit where credit's due.

Thanks

Well, you can't be blamed for not living in my head and giggling over "shut it down!" That cracks ME up... and then I share... cryptically.

My friendly suggestion is to skim the other threads about Montblanc's dollar-worthiness and see if you still feel like asking the question.

My other friendly suggestion is, if you still feel like pursuing the topic, please make it funny. I know. I can't expect that. But I, for one, would really appreciate it.

P.S. Welcome to the Vortex!

Moderator's note: this has been beaten to death before and it usually ends up in a pointless shouting match. I will let it go on for now, but this will get locked at the first sign of trouble.

I don't believe I've heard an MB owner complain that the pen was a poor writer (unless the pen was damaged, of course), but I have no plans to buy a new one. They seem, in general, to be fairly well made pens (particularly the vintage ones) but are much too expensive for simply a good pen. The advertising drives me 'round the bend, though! There have been some rumblings that the "precious resin" modern pens are brittle, but I can't personally confirm that.

I'm perfectly happy with my vintage Parker and Sheaffer pens, none of which I've paid very much for, and unless I happen upon a similar price MB, will do without.

I won't be buying a $20,000 Sheaffer Pharoh or whatever they call them, and wouldn't even if I were rich.

They are just pens with which one writes words on paper.....

I certainly feel that my Montblancs were worth the price, however several other pens that were FREE I find very over priced. :bunny01:

I think they're worth buying, though they can be pricey new. Used-market prices are mostly reasonable.

Well, you just touched very sensitive spot (close to the one that moderators so often calls "brands bashing" smile.gif

But, as it was stated above, all about pens and inks are so subjective, so please let OP his own personal approach to the subject (although I sincerely doubt anything fresh will come up from it). I believe people who don't like thread can easily avoid it; ignore is far better option than Off Topics filled with wounded vanity/feelings smile.gif

My contribution: personally, I like MB pens, but don't like LE and SE and similar stuff. In 90% of cases I find them to be overpraised kitsch. But can understand someone else has completely different opinion and enjoy collecting them. In general, I don't like pen that is (regarding price and look etc.) primarily status symbol, not writing instrument. Someone else could see the same pen like (well, almost? cool.gif ) work of art...

Believe, like many times before, tolerance and accepting diversities is the key...

I voted yes, because quality wise and the attention to details they are really up among the top. I agree the price is rather high, but price is determined by the market, and has zero relation to the actual cost of production. This applies to all items and services. Do you think an ipod really costs that more to produce than many of its competitors?

The last post contradicts itself. Votes yes because of...and then goes on to say that it's all supply and demand stuff. That's just a contorted way of saying that you think MB are great. We knew this topic would fall in the toilet

Thanks

I have written with some (never have owned, so I can't say exactly) and feel that there is nothing 'special' about a Montblanc. Granted, they have extremely good nibs, feel great in the hand, but there isn't anything dramatic about it, any more than, say, a Pelikan M800. Not to say that either is a 'bad' or 'drab' pen.

So are Mont Blanc pens worth it? Yes and no, because some of that 'expense' is from the (and I hate to use this word, but for lack of a better) hype that comes with the brand. However, the money that does go into the pen is definitely worth it.

The sword is mightier than the pen. However, swords are now obsolete whereas pens are not.

I think that the MBs are most about status. I know of several Captains (second highest rank in my area) who have retired and then get a gold watch (not sure which brand) but if you retire as a Sheriff (the highest rank in my area) you get the gold watch and a MB.

Same thing with the police officers' ribbons, they wear them if they want to show off and do not wear them if they do not want to.

On that note, I have nothing against MB because I like showing off my M90 so I use it everywhere and I never hide it in a case.

I could go into jewelry but I'm not.

Check out my ink reviews.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
