51 Colors, sizes, etc .........

OK, in an effort to get a more realistic idea of what I have, I am trying to ascertain which 51 colors are more difficult to find. I have read that the nassau green and cordovan brown in the Vacs are not common.

What about the aero colors.... I have heard that cocoa is not common....

Also sizes.... are the demis really that much more valuable than full sized pens..

Canadian 51 common/uncommon ??????

For instance I have

1951 date coded Cocoa Demi... common/uncommon????

Canadian T7.. date code Cordovan Brown Vac .... common/uncommon??

I figure that since I have decided to steal the world supply of 51s, I should start to learn more about them....

Griz,

This ain't that simple, the best reference is still Ernesto's site http://www.parker51.com/gpage1.html4.html

But I would say that although the ones you have got are 'desireable' and maybe harder to find, they are neither uncommon nor rare. Some colours are more rare in either single or double jewel and I have found that Demis seem to be a bit less than others.

Also some that I can find here in the UK would be uncommon in the US whereas others are easier to find in the US than Europe. However, say ten years ago a Silver capped "51" Vac would be difficult to get in the UK, whereas now I have bought three easily all off either PT, FPN or eBay. Global market I guess. :D

My advice is buy 'em in the colours because you like 'em. But if you find that Cedar Blue Double Jewel with an Empire cap, Get Your Grubby Mitts Off 'Cos it's MINE :P

Well... uhmmm... If I were you I'd look around for the "51" that was made in honour of the coronation of Queen Juliana of The Netherlands in 1948. It's bright orange and extremely rare.

O, by the way, you will surely need all the time you usually spend ransacking eBay to find this pen! ;)

Was that a 'One Off' or did they make a limited run?

You are in the right place to find one and I am closer than Old Griz, so we can get the drop on him here :D

Thanks Jim.... for some reason did not go to that page on Ernesto's site... that place has fantastic info..... I might just have to spring for the 51 book at the DC Show if I make some real cash.....

As for that Empire Capped Double Jewel Cedar Blue 51..... are you talking about the one I got last night on eBay for $37.50 inc shipping.... price was low because it has a broad stub nib (not popular in the US)

If it looks as good as the pictures, I'll keep you in mind if I decide to sell it...

MMMMMMM.... let's see... supply (I got one).... demand (you don't got one).....

Price = supply + demand factor + grovel factor..... Yup that sounds about right.

Husssshhhh, Jim, it's a decoy to keep OldGriz busy looking for an eanigmatic non-existent "51"... While he's searching for it: more opportunities for us mere mortals...

I can't speak about the English or MkIII 51's, but as to the Vac and Aero US models.

I have been slowly accumulating all the colors, and have only Nassau to get.

Vac - among the 2J Vacs, it is generally accepted that the Mustard, Nassau and Buckskin Beige colors are the hardest to find. This is not just due to production quantities, but also that these tend to discolor fairly easily. So, when we say "hardest to find," think "hardest to find with good color and matching shell/blind-cap/barrels.

These 3 colors were also made in 1J vacs, and are even harder to come by.

Among the Aero colors, I believe only Plum to be significantly harder to find than any of the others. Quite a few burgundy Aeros are mistakenly listed as Plum, but when compared side-by-side, the Plum has a very strong purple tone.

This only considers the plastic bodied pens in relative rarity. I would think that any 51 Presidential would be considered rarer than any of the above.

Best regards, greg

Don't feel bad. I'm old; I'm meh about most things.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
