THE BIG French Clairefontaine Order

GouletPens

Recommended Posts

I just wanted to say thank you again to everyone for your patience. I just finished a brutal week, battling a flooded crawlspace in my house, a nasty cold, and now some kind of crazy eye thing!! I'm really being put through the ringer! My wife and I had a baby shower last weekend, and we have another one tomorrow. Life's crazy in the Goulet household! Despite that, I was able to finish a large corporate pen order I've had consuming a great deal of my time, so this coming week will be much easier for me. I'm going to work on compiling all of the inquiries so far, and get them into Exaclair this coming week so I can finally start getting some prices to you. Hang tough!

Reading this thread has caused me to find a reference that will convert European (metric to US standard paper weights.

http://www.paper-paper.com/weight.html

See approximately one-third down the page for the weight conversion table. 80 g/sq. m. paper is slightly heavier than 20-lb. (copy) paper, while 90 g/sq. m. paper is equivalent to 24-lb. (resume) paper.

I have not checked the accuracy of the values in the table, but they seem intuitively correct.

Mr. Goulet, perhaps you could educate me -- how do the famous Herbin inks compare to those I customarily use (Levenger and Private Reserve. mostly).

Regards,

"Sal"

I don't know how much I can compare those inks because I don't have a lot of experience with them. From the information shared by others here, PR is more saturated than J. Herbin. Herbin allows for more shading while writing. I don't know anything really about Levenger ink. Perhaps others can be more helpful here?

Private Reserve will appear much more intense than Herbin due to the higher saturation. And they sometimes work better on cheap paper where a less saturated ink might skip due to coatings.

However, most of the Herbin inks will give incredible shading and subtle colors, if that is of interest to you. They're far easier to rinse out of your pens, won't stain the light colored ones, and behave better on good paper in the sense of drying faster.

UPDATE!!!

I just saw the new products that Exaclair is going to import, which has been a bit of a hinge-pin for this French order. Now that I know what's going to be imported regularly, I can tell you what's NOT going to be available so you can get French order ideas going again. So here's the run down of what's coming out that I'm going to have available regularly (there may be other items available, but not anything this crowd would be interested in).

Rhodia 5.75" square and 8.25" square graph pad (orange and black)

Rhodia 'dot' pads, black only (A7, A5, A4, A3)

CF Mlle. No Wirebound w/ elastic A6

CF Mlle. No Gift set (large magnetic journal, notepad, and gift bag)

CF Staplebound 'twin books', two subject notebooks

CF 'Life.Unplugged' notebooks. These are like Moleskines with CF paper! More details about those later, b/c these are completely new.

Quo Vadis Habanas (blank) in black, red, green, and raspberry, same sizes as current Habanas

CF 'DCP' Portfolio paper- loose sheets, 100g (27lb) printer paper, 100 sheets per pack

I don't know *exactly* when these products will become available, and I don't have any of them in my possession. This is only info from the new 2010 Exaclair catalog. Let me know what products of these you might be interested for pre-orders! Also, if you're wanting loose sheets (French ruled, lined, etc) we will have to include them in the French order as Exaclair will not be importing them for sale through their retailers. I'll be working on getting prices for everyone who's inquired so far (for French order products)!!

Okay, I've sent off the first email including (I think) everything that has been requested so far. It's QUITE likely I missed something, but I'll post the prices as soon as I get them and you can contact me with additional inquiries. The ball is now rolling with the French order, so save up your pennies now!

I was really excited to read that you might be carrying the Clairfontaine loose leaf paper but I must admit that I've gotten a bit lost in the posts so I thought I'd ask, straight out like, will you be able to get the lined and/or graph loose leaf papers in the single and/or double pages? Or are we just talking the French ruled?

Sorry, I know it's getting a little foggy. I can order whatever you want, but it has to be by the carton pack (25-50 packs, depending on the type). French-ruled is what people have shown a lot of interest in, but I can (in theory) get you any product you want from the 356 page catalog.

I'm curious to hear about these CF Moleskine clones.

These aren't French order items, they are going to be available regularly this Spring. Exaclair (the US importer) is going to carry these as soon as they're available, and you can bet I'll have them when they come in!!!

What would I have to do? Find other people to split the order with me? I'm not really sure what 25-50 "packs" translates to in actual number of sheets or cost. I'm interested in any one of those types. How do I get more information?

Cedar,

The reason the carton packs vary is because the CF products themselves vary. For example, the loose sheets product (#1731) with 50 sheets per pack requires a minimum purchase of 50 packs (making 2500 sheets). The product (#1751) with 100 sheets per pack requires a minimum purchase of 25 packs (making 2500 sheets). They are the exact same paper, but depending on which is purchased will set the minimum quantity. Does that make sense? Flip to the loose sheets pages of the catalog to see what I'm talking about: http://clairefontaine-rhodia-2009.e-catalogues.info/0-30 It's all very confusing, I agree, but you'll have to just bear with me. There are THOUSANDS of products in the French catalog, and for me to communicate and clarify everything will just take patience on everyone's part.

If you're not interested in getting an entire carton pack, then yes, coordinating with other FPN members will be the way to go, splitting the carton up. I have put in a request to Exaclair to get prices for all the loose sheets, so once I get those numbers, we can really start working things out.

I understand that, but are they Moleskines with CF paper in them? Do they come in the same sizes? I really don't care for the Rhodia Webnotebooks (too puffy) or the Habanas (which is not the way you spell it in Spanish, but I digress . . .) I'd love to buy something like the hardcover pocket Moleskine with better paper.

The Life.Unplugged. CF notebooks coming out are in 2 versions: staplebounds in 3.5"x5.5" and 5.25"x8.25", and a glued spine 'roadbook' that's 3.5"x5.5". These won't be available for a couple of months, even to me as a retailer. I don't even know if I should be talking about this early since it'll only make you wait so long, but the cat's out of the bag anyway! I don't know the specifics of the paper or anything yet, but I will certainly vlog about them and post here on FPN as soon as I get one in my hands!

^thanks.

that sounds like a good form factor. I hope they're affordable and well done (and come in graph paper).

I'm using a Clairefontaine Basics notebook now and I find the form factor a little too unwieldy sometimes for my uses.

And I think the pocket/hardcover Moles are just perfect in terms of size/functionality (too bad the paper's iffy).

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!!

I got the full price list for the Clairefontaine French catalog, and it's a whopper!!!! 5600+ items, wow! So what I'm going to do is look up the prices for everything that has been requested so far, and publish them for all to see. It's going to take me just a little bit to get this done, but I just wanted to give you an update to let you know this ball is now rolling. I'll get the prices up as soon as I can, and let you all know when payment and order placement will begin!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
