The Old Griz Gentelmen's pen

I received a very nice surprise in the mail a couple of weeks ago. My Very first custom pen! As most of you know Old Griz AKA Tom Mullane is a pen turner. (If not of world renown now then it's not too far off .)

 

He makes pens of all kinds shapes, sizes & materials. This model in particular is called the "Gentlemen", it's made of an alternative stone called Blue Coral and is just about the most beautiful pen I've seen yet. When I first saw it I thought it was made from some sort of exotic wood because of the grain patterns in it but after talking to Tom on the phone I was amazed when he informed me it was a man made product.

 

My husband Dennis told him I liked a large pen & after some discussion Tom recommended this one. It's truly a monster sized pen! It is 5 1/2" capped and not made to be posted. If it were able to be posted the length would be in the 7" range! The cap is 3/4" across at the widest point and the barrel is a full 5/8" That's wider than most vintage caps by nearly a quarter of an inch...lol. The balance is excellent and feels very good in my hand. Dennis told him I like a heavy pen and that is exactly what this is. It's 68 Gr. Capped and 38Gr. uncapped! I LOVE IT!!! It has a little bit of a step down in the transition from the barrel to the smooth metal section. It's got a VERY smooth rigid medium steel IPG nib with no tooth to it at all. Truly this is one of the smoothest and best writing pens I've ever owned.

 

All in all, I dearly love this pen. The more I write with it, the more it feels like it was made for my hand.....oh..wait a minute...it was...lol.

 

Thanks Tom for the very beautiful pen, for your amazing craftsmanship and all of the time you put into making this pen. It will most certainly be one I have for a very long time.

What's the grip section? "Stone" or metal or resin? If it's the stone, how does it feel???

The grip section is metal... same trim as the body trim

I really admire the way you experiement with materials and technqiues, Tom. You've achieved some unique and elegant looking pens. From what I can see of this one and the Dragon pen they're just as individual and striking as, say, the more successul Stipulas and Viscontis.

Thank you very much... it is nice to have my work appreciated by main stream fountain pen people.... it really means a lot to me...

Now with any luck, I will have the same kind of acceptance at the DC Show...
