Greetings from DocNib's PenEmporium! Going thru boxes of assorted goodies that came my way & found a coin necklace that might interest the silver collector. This one is a wonderful example of a 900-Silver Peruvian Seated Libertad (Liberty) Sol (Sun) from 1865 (produced from 1864 to 1935) with a vintage Sterling Silver necklace/coin edge around it (form-fits around the coin edge) and a 24" Copper chain. The coin measures approx. 1.5" in diameter (37mm), so about the size of a U.S. Silver Dollar. Take a look...

The obverse features a seated Lady Liberty holding a scepter topped by a Liberty Cap and a shield emblazoned with a radiant sun. In front of Liberty is a column topped with a wreath and wrapped with a ribbon on which is written the word “LIBERTAD”. On the upper outer periphery is the motto "FIRME Y FELIZ POR LA UNION" or "Steady and happy for the union". On the lower outer periphery is the denomination "UN SOL".

The reverse is emblazoned with the coat of arms of Peru, which is represented with Peruvian symbols, such as the national animal of Peru, the llama-like Vicuña (the South American version of a camel). To the right is the Peruvian national tree (a quina tree), and below is a cornucopia overflowing with coins, symbolizing Peru’s great wealth of precious metals. On the outer periphery are the words "REPUBLICA PERUANA" and "LIMA" (for the Lima Mint).

Copper chain & Sterling Silver necklace edge-holder in excellent condition, tiny jeweler's screw at top holds necklace fitting together, coin has been polished by previous owner but does show very crisp detail, left lower side of obverse shows "die crack" on surface which means the die used to impress detail on the silver blank had a crack in it (shows up as a raised line on the coin's surface), coin edge is still very crisp, spring-loaded copper circular clasp on chain, very good condition for being 144-years old & would make an unusual Holiday gift...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
