Just received this morning from Pam: Aurora Sole Mini

This is a picture of Aurora Sole Mini and a painting in sumi-e I made for the occasion, "Sun, Sunflowers and Aurora Sole"

First impressions

I was very excited when I opened the box! I'm expecting a lot from this pen, first because it's my first limited number edition and second, because my first name means also "Aurora Sole" (light from the dawn in fact). The box reminds of a luxury watch case. Everything is put in the way you can appreciate this beauty. Box opened, I discovered a shining orange pen: here comes Aurora Sole Mini

Design/Size/Weight

This orange celluloid finish is very beautiful. Very light and very small (Laura will love it), you have a comfortable feeling when you take it in your hand.

Pen uncapped (Nice greek design on the cap):

Serial number:

A little sun engraved on the tip of the cap:

Comparison size between Danitrio Hanryo, Platinum maki-e #3776, Aurora Sole Mini:

Nib design, performance and filling system

Design is classic, I'd say. 18k 750 gold nib.

In terms of writing, it's very smooth. The ink flow is ideal, not too juicy, not too dry, perfect for my everyday handwriting.

Filling system is piston filler and it has the Aurora feature "secret hidden reservoir+" which must mean it can hold even more ink. I expect more writing and less refilling time then!

Conclusion

This is a treasure I'll keep for all my life. Whether you like small pens or not, you will be attracted by its orange finish and its nib performance. Like I said, Aurora Sole means a lot for me as it's the meaning of my first name, an highly reason for purchasing it. Ask Pam for prices if you are interested ;)

Excellent review, my friend!! Thanks for including pictures, it really gives us an idea of the size of the pen. For me, it is too small for my tastes but a full size optima with that color would be really nice. I am glad you found yourself a keeper!!

Yay! My Sole Mini has arrived in Australia and is on it's way to me too!

I am very pleased by the size photo - an excellent idea of size against the Hanryo. :D

I'll post a Review as well - I have had one half-written ever since I ordered the pen. ;)

I have also mixed a special ink to grace my Sole Mini with - a rich, deep gold ochre shade ...delicious. :)

Well done, sir, though I can't figure how you people can get a new pen writing in such short order. Don't you do the flushing with soapy water, rinse and thoroughly drying which takes me a day plus.

Nice color. Reminds me of the orange in Delta's Dolce Vita.

Your booklet will explain the hidden reservoir feature. It doesn't hold any more ink than it would without that feature, but puts a little of the fill into an area that can be accessed when you notice the signs of feed starvation. Activate the feature, et violá! Another page or two can be written.

The cap threads' position might bother those who hold their pens close to the nib. I'm one of them. I must get my fumbly fingers close to the acrtion! I would like the size, however, as size doesn't seem to be much of a factor with me. The Sailor Professional Gear is about the same size and I have no trouble with that. I don't even post it!

Good luck with your new namesake!

Hey Roger,

I agree on the color looking like the Dolce Vita OS.

As for the Soapy water thing, only the cartridge Converter pens are the ones that are most problematic. Those are the ones I had to wash out.

As for the Dolce Vita, I gave you the story on that. It took more than soap and water to get that bad boy running. It needed a Bypass Surgery, now it is running very well!!!

I had to add this in, I love where the threads on the section. They are closer to the nib rather than being further up on the section.

Thank you all for your comments! :)

What's bothering me a little for the moment is that the black ink is somehow staining the celluloid color as you can see on 7th picture with hanryo and platinum.

Laura, I hope tou receive yours very soon and flood with Aurora Sole pictures^^

Congratulations! What a BEAUTIFUL little pen! Reminds me of one of my favorite inks - Private Reserve's Orange Crush.

So many pens, so little time!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
