I'm not sure if this relates or is of interest but I've got paper with a Bell watermark.

I have an NOS black J with a Triple A [AAA] logo embossed in a box. Only one that I've seen so far. Have seen the Salt Lake and the Bell System Esties. On eBay they don't seem to be going at a premium because of the logo.

I've seen AAA pens before, but I still have NOT seen the Salt Lake ones. Was the Salt Lake one you saw like the one on Brian's website with no clip? I want one!!!

Yes, Stephen, one that I've seen was at "esterbrook.net," but I recall seeing another black with clip but can't corroborate that sighting.

Interestingly shaped MP, farmboy.

I have been secretly coveting one of these ever since my Esterbrook bug was spreading through my veins.

I have succumbed, entirely. I've just been on quite the eBay Estie binge, and have come up with some fun stuff. My Bell Systems black LJ arrived today. It was listed as unused and mint, with no nib. I have plenty of nibs, so I was looking for the pen... it came in a box with the original filling papers. I don't know if it's really unused, because there are a couple of scratches on the barrel, but the pen is totally, totally clean and the ink sac is in perfect condition.

Of course I inked it right up, popped in my fresh NOS 9788 nib, and had fun writing with it for a while. Took some pen porn photos. Haven't posted them online yet but hope to share soon.

Damn, this baby is groovy!

Esties are totally taking over as my favorite pens. I am so in love with them.

I has the bug, but good! :happyberet:

Just wrote a fairly detailed blog entry on this, with a bunch of photos.

Why is there no entry for Esterbrook in Wikipedia?

Why is there no entry for Esterbrook in Wikipedia?

Yes, there is a dearth of information for anything Esterbrook in Wikipedia. However, I did find an interesting tidbit in an eBay auction recently:

"The Esterbrook Steel Pen Factory, the first of its kind in America was established at the foot of Cooper Street in 1858, by Richard Esterbrook. Two or Three attempts had been made before this time to manufacture pens in the United States, but they had proven to be failures. There were no men in this country learned in the pen trade and no suitable machinery, so it was necessary to design and build all machines. Only fifteen people were on the first payroll, but the growth of the company has been a steady one. The buildings have been added tp from time to time and in 1912 a five-story concrete building was erected nearly doubling the size of the plant. Automatic Machines have replaced hand work, and the output greatly increased.

"The original Esterbrook factory was built right over the old Camden Water Works and for many years the scrap was dumped into the reservoir. A part of the original stand pipe is still carefully guarded by the company. Where the present new building joins the old brick building was the original Ferry Dock, and the company had great difficulty in getting the piles for the new building down through the logs that were used as a foundation for the Ferry Slip. It is hard to visualize that where Locke's old factory is (now owned by the Victor Talking Machine Company) was open water and the Pen Company kept its boats anchored there.

"The output of the Esterbrook Factory has grown from a small beginning to a production of over 216,000,000 pens a year. These are shipped to every country in the world. None of the original group of men connected with the plant are living, but Charles Bowden has been continuously with the company practically sixty years."

I have no idea of the original source.

This most likely refers to production of what we now refer to as dip pen nibs. When you consider the amount of dip pen nibs you could get in a box, that's not a terrible amount of nibs.

Brian, how many pens did they typically put in a box? Did it vary / were there different "sized" boxes? I could see the need for a gross of pens in an office environment.

Best, greg

Don't feel bad. I'm old; I'm meh about most things.

I was actually going to start a topic about this one day. I've always wondered why they chose 144 to put in most of their boxes. After reading your post, I looked up the word "gross" and now I have a better idea... yet still don't know why a gross is a good number... (is it bad that I didn't know what this word means? Is it still used today??)

anyone of you guys won this set? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300403857140&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

it has a Catholic Order of Foresters imprint... another "skunk" estie :)

Skunk is an official Esterbrook color that indicated Bell System Property. This would just be a penguin in skunks clothing.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
