Well wondering if it is worth it to contact swisher pens about one of the Dollar piston demo I got today. One writes beautifully but the other is really scratchy and do not like it. Should i try and contact them over a 10.00 pen or just enjoy paying 25.00 for one that works great. I know they are cheap pens but I heard some good things about them and wanted to try them.

I think you should at least contact Swisher and let them know about it and find out what courses of action are available to you.

Fixing scratchy might actually be pretty easy, and require no tools other than a good magnifier or loupe. You could check out some of the threads on the repair forum or here on nib smoothing, but the basic idea is to look under the magnifier first to see if the tines are aligned. Then if necessary use a brown paper bag or some more controlled gentle abrasive to smooth away any rough spots.

I, too, think you should contact Swisher. They need to know that at least some of the Dollar pens aren't up to par. You may be just a little disappointed with this pen being scratchy, but someone else might order just one, get a scratchy pen and see the whole order from Swisher's as being a bad experience. I think you will be doing this seller a service by letting them know this product, even though it is inexpensive, didn't meet your expectations.

Well they said I could return it for an exchange. I am not sure if I am going to worry about paying to ship back. I dont have a good magnifier but will try to find one.

An improvised magnifier can be found in a short focus camera lens -- if you have a 30 mm or shorter lens for a 35 mm or DSLR, it'll give you enough magnification to tell if a nib is aligned (look into the front side of the lens, seems to work better). FWIW, a 25 mm is about 5x nominal magnification, but you get an additional 5x for proximity, making it effectively 10x if you hold the lens close to your eye.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
