Carter's Ink Cubes

Good afternoon-

I have received a couple requests for pics of some of the cubes in my collection. I put them up on my site.

WARNING,

due to the way this page is constructed, it is very heavy and slow to load. The good news, though, is that once you have loaded all the thumbnail images, you have also loaded all the full-size images.

I would be very interested to hear from anyone who collects Cubes and/or has info on the versions made. The little I know about the ink cubes is purely from observation as I've acquired them.

Best regards, greg

I braved dialup speed, and an ancient Powerbook, but it was worth it! I didn't know about the Carter's cubes. The old graphics are great! :)

How can you tell when you're out of invisible ink?

These are really stunning. Thank you for posting these. I'm enjoying them a lot, even though I was slow to find the topic.

Stunning collection. I love that type of page construction. Where did you get all of the cubes?

Hi Mike,

Nearly all from trolling eBay. Also picked up a couple from Pendemonium. Sam (co-owner of Pendemonium) is a big bottle collector and they have a great stock of vintage inks and bottles.

Thanks. :)

Collecting Canadian variants (especially where the bottle is otherwise identical) was a big time slippery slope when it came to searching out more and more bottles.

But that is part of what this madness is all about.

Thanks, Greg. Haven't looked at that site for a long time. Last time I did, I could have sworn that Carter's cubes weren't there....

Nice to see Carter's getting attention again. Greg do you have any of the Coltrock Carter inkcube inkstations?

The bottles look call and I enjoy the names. Did you have any ink left in some of the cubes?

Very few of them. I think those caps must not have provided very good seals. Mostly dried ink dust in them. Also quite a few rusted caps, so afraid to try to reconstitute the ink.

One of each so I could set up an example. Not set up at the moment, but neat at the time.

Did they come with any original paperwork stating Colt Plastics, and or made of Coltrock?

Sadly, no.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
