Pen Posse's Dinner With Globetrotterjon

Does anyone have a Dialog 3. It's seems to be one of the most eagerly anticipated pens. If the Dialog 3 is at Flax, can we get a picture of Todd holding the pen?

I would almost pay to see that!

You'd pay to see Todd and I fighting over it, though. :)

I have to admit, I wouldn't believe my eyes.

I would have to film it and post it to YouTube and then request a Lamy Video Footage forum at FountainPenNetwork.com. And then maybe it would start to make sense... *laughs*

As your volunteer Lamy moderator . . . . I have ruled:

Deirdre and I will split the pen. The long way.

OK, coming straight from work, so will try to make it to Flax pending traffic and if my last patient cooperate (ie. shows up on time. LOL). It is a nice store.... or 7-ish in Mai Do. It is a smaller store, but nice Sailor selection and interesting papers/cards....

So Roll call. who is going FOR SURE:

Jon + 1

Lisa

Kevin

Ricky

Deirdre + 1?

Todd?

*ERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!*

(Sound of braking hard.)

Hi! Change of plans! Actually, not a change so much as a reversion (reversal?) with some flexibility.

In deference to our visitors' preference, let's revisit the whole Mexican restaurant in the Mission scenario -- OR a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown (either way, we'll face the same parking and car-pooling situation).

I should have waited until I'd heard back before pushing Westfield. We could always Pen Posse the Maido since we all live nearby. But this time, let's stick to the original plan.

Flax, 6-7:00 PM

Mexican in the Mission or Chinese in Chinatown. Once we've chosen the restaurant, those who want to skip Flax can meet us there; again, it'll be around 7:20-7:30, depending.

And yes, good thinking, Kevin, we'll need a head count. (Kevin, add MsLoathsome!)

Sorry for the confusion, Pen Posse-ers!

heh, the infamous tampen with the naughty nib

I'm going unless something else happens. I want to hear about Emporium Capwell and the carousel on the roof. I've only heard about it, and the carousel may have ended too soon for me for all I know, but I wish I had seen the dome before.

In the food basement, we can stake out a bunch of tables and push them together. And plastic trays means things don't roll away.

Can anybody bring an aqua/pastel blue Sheaffer Snorkel, or peacock blue too? We may see all three blues.

If anybody has sage, we might see all three greens. No, it's plain old green that I have.

Any reds?

Triumph (GF)? Masterpieces I wouln't blame anyone for leaving home.

But then I also want to compare Balances and pens in celluloid or bright acylics.

No problem.

Let me see places in Chinatown......

How about....

R & G Lounge (good location since it is a block from the Washington Square parking lot in Chinatown)

A know a few other places in Chinatown but these are either bad for groups, have unsafe hygiene, not really Chinese, and/or a variety of other problems. Unfortunately, Chinatown is not usually one of the places I think of in SF for good Chinese food. For better Chinese food, you'll need to head into the Sunset or Richmond district which is clear on the other side of town.

As for Mexican food, I second Poc Chuc. It's a great little place with an emphasis on food from the Yucatan.

Yeah, my last post was typed at the same as the one that came in before it.

Does the globetrotter like Japanese pens and stationery? If he doesn't, then there's no use taking him to Maido. Where are they staying? They may shop or eat in the combined Market malls anyway before we show up.

Which kind of Chinese food do they like? Yeah, not all the restaurants in Chinatown can be good. Some must be, but one would have to find them. And probably few there are big, clean, and lit up. R&G Lounge sounds safe. I can't even remember if I've been there this decade. Hey, we can use a lazy suzan to pass pens across the table.

I looked up New Asia for dinner, and I'm scared that they say they have music and dancing some nights.

Has anybody tried Red Jade on Church? Is it good, or is it to be distrusted with that location and a name that makes too much sense? There's no competition if they're the only place without steam tables.

Anybody know the Castro Mexican places? The one on Market is probably too small. The one on Castro may be big enough. I don't know any of the food. And there's one on 18th.

Snorkels?

Pelikanos?

Chalanas?

ink?

typewriters?

OK, we REALLY got to nail down a place. I have been to R&G lounge, but that was B.C years (Before Children). If they are still good, then that's fine with me, at least parking is not a problem.

I am totally lost in Mission District, so if Poc Chuc is good then that's fine too. how big are they? Will we feel pressured if the place is small and they ae busy?

Just as a data point, I can't walk very far, so I'll need a place with relatively close parking (I have a placard, which helps tons).

Also, he's bringing a guest and probably doesn't want to subject her to a FRIDAY NIGHT in SAN FRANCISCO with PEN NERDS. But I'm just guessing.

I'm rather surprised that he'd subject his female guest to ANY night with PEN NERDS. My spouse has put me on notice that she politely declines going to meetings, meals, gatherings, or assemblages of any kind with your likes. That goes for Friday, Tuesday, Groundhog Day and any other day her foreseeable lifetime. Nothing personal, you understand, but in her considered opinion you (and I) share possibly the most boring hobby known to civilized man.

Poc Chuc is smallish but last time I was there they had two parties of 8 people each. Parking in the Mission is more challenging. There are probably more good places for Mexican food in the Mission.

R & G is still pretty good. I mean they are not on the level of places like Fook Yuen, Koi Palace, Flower Lounge, etc. but you won't pay those prices either. They remodeled a few years ago and certainly have the space. The big bonus for R & G is that it is one block from the parking structure.

Whereas when my sweetie got sprung from the hospital, he couldn't WAIT to go to dinner with the Pen Posse.

He'd have gone to see Twilight for the 6th time if that's where I was going, though. After a week in the hospital, who could blame him?

Excellent!! I am so glad he is out of the hospital and will be coming... now does he have preference Mexican vs. Chinese food? Like Ricky says, if you want minimum walking, then R&G prob. would be better, as parking is just across the street on corner of Kernyand Clay.

After reading everyone's posts, I think we should go to R&G. It will accommodate a larger group, we can be loud, we can linger, we can order a whole messload of dishes to share family style with Globetrotter Jon and S.O., and there is validated parking close by.

So? R&G Lounge at 7:20? Fearless leader (That means you, E!), I've heard we should make reservations just in case, even though it's a Thursday night.

I'll assume Rick's coming (he's been out of the hospital for six months, actually, just is still having side effects -- which seem to have made a leap for the better in the last week).

R&G sounds great.

Hey Ricky, if we can get 10 people, maybe we can get one of their private room? I'll be more than happy to pick up the extra tab. Let me know.

Kevin

Sounds like a good idea.

I guess we need a head count at this point (regardless of where we eat).

R&G Lounge it is!

They're open only until 9:30, so that means we'll be forced to leave... but we'll be very close to North Beach for anyone who wants to go out for a cafe au lait at Cafe Trieste or a beer at Vesuvio or books at City Lights or some other Beatnik sort of thing that others possibly might be interested in and not just me, heh.

What's the head count? One of my friends is interested but can't commit this far in advance (*laughs*). So who's coming?

Let's get a count so I can call and make a reservation.

Oo! I've printed out R&G's Double Happy Coupon. It might come in handy!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
