Pen Posse's Dinner With Globetrotterjon

GlobetrotterJon's globetrotting is bringing him and a guest to the Bay Area in early November, which is a fine reason to call Pen Posse!

Day: Thursday, November 5, 2009

Time: 6:00 PM until you drop (or leave or, you know, whatever)

Place: Let's meet at Flax so the newbies and lurkers can have a good look around and then go to a restaurant (to be determined).

So, meet at Flax, touch some pens, try some inks, buy some notebooks (or inks or pens), then leave by 6:45 or 7:00 (which is when Flax closes, so no dawdling).

And then dinner!

As Kevin said in the other thread: "What's not to like.... more partying with pens, friends... more inks... more eating.... more drinking.... more pens!!!" Woot!

Who's in?

FarmBoy, can't you bring Mrs. FarmBoy and Boy FarmBoy?

I guess I count as a "newbie" because I don't know what Flax is. I would like to go, if it's doable from where I live (Santa Cruise).

Flax is more commonly known as linseed. It is grown for the seeds and fiber.

GlobetrotterJon has expressed a preference for Mexican or Chinese after Flax (so I guess he hasn't been to either of those countries lately) (but I could be wrong). Since Flax is on the cusp of the Mission, how about Mexican? A friend swears by Cancun on Valencia -- small, cheap, fast, and prone to wandering Mariachi bands. I'm not choosing that place; I'm mentioning it. Anyone else? Suggestions?

Todd, you crack me up.

Oh, and guess who's no longer at Flax? Sadly, they've lost a pen person in the pen dept.

On the other hand, she's got some cool new ventures coming up.

So now that the new board software hides things from us, where is globetrotterjon from? PM or be vague if this is supposed to be a secret.

If he is/we are planning for Thursday, is it because Friday doesn't work? Friday night is when I go to the city at 9 anyway, so if all else were equal, going early would have been neat. I take it things aren't equal.

Flax is probably considered easy and close parking for the Mission, but then they must lock the gate when they close. There are probably more of us than the front lot holds.

Yeah, don't get any Noodler's bulletproof inks on your linen.

Santa Cruise, is that the new slang, like Shallow Alto?

Thursdays don't ever work for me because I have to almost my week's translation work on that day. But any other day would fine.

He is from over there...!

Yeah, Friday doesn't work. The Globetrotter has globetrotting to do. Also, he's bringing a guest and probably doesn't want to subject her to a FRIDAY NIGHT in SAN FRANCISCO with PEN NERDS. But I'm just guessing.

We'll just have to bring Pen Posse to Santa Cruz. Make a fun day of it -- Kevin and Todd can bring their wives and kids to play at the Beach Boardwalk! Is the Big Dipper still there?

*Googling*

Wait, it's the Giant Dipper now? Or maybe the Big Dipper was at San Francisco's Playland.

Yes, Santa Cruz... we must make it so.

San Diego has a rollercoast at Mission Beach, and I thought it was a different dipper, so I was going to say it was big, if Santa Cruz's is giant, but it turns out they have the same name. Ours is bigger though.

We'd probably want to leave the pens in a car, rather than take them on the ride.

Sorry about the linen. What article and what color? Will you get it dyed to match?

Alas, Thursdays are "swim days" for my son, so I'm going to be at the pool while he takes lessons. I shall have to pass on this one. The Santa Cruz Posse suggestion is strongly seconded. There must be a cool diner/cafe/bistro where we can hang out, or else we can do Posse at the beach (but it's likely to get cold soon, and we don't want sand in our pens, do we?)

Globetrotter is from nowhere but everywhere. (Just waxing poetic, he is from Earth.)

I'll see what can be arranged. Bed time around here is 8:15-8:30 so evenings become busy but we do need to eat.

Okay, I am in. Flax is not actually THAT close to the Mission. Walking would be a short trek. Would probably still be better to hop on the 14 or whatnot. I love Cancun. But was Globetrotter Jon expecting more of a sit-down, full-service place or not? Cause Cancun is definitely a taqueria.

I subscribe to The Rule of 10 (pens, that is)

As I understand it, the Mission starts around Valencia & Duboce, as I've always heard Zeitgeist as being in the Mission.

Flax is a block away from there.

Granted, the bulk of the mission is further away.

One of my favorite places in the Mission is Ti Couz (a place where I can have anything on the menu), though I don't remember it being particularly vegan-friendly (it's a buckwheat crepe joint). There's also no reservations, so it's come and wait, but Thursday night may not be busy. Menu here. That said, it's inexpensive, so it tends to be busy.

I've also had good food from The Pork Store at 16th & Valencia. Their specialty is pork, but they do have vegetarian and vegan items, too. Menu here.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
