Most everyone that wanders into this forum likes and either owns or would like to own a Montblanc pen, but there are several other Top Tier manufacturers. In the Richemont Group there are two others, Alfred Dunhill and Cartier and outside Richemont Group two others come to mind, Caran d'Ache and ST Dupont.

For those of you that have one or more of the others, what do you like and dislike about those you have?

I also have a CdA Ecridor retro. Very well made pen, excellent nib. I will be buying a ST Dupont soon, just to experience their famous smooth nib and cap click!

In case you wish to write to me, pls use ONLY email by clicking here. I do not check PMs. Thank you.

I just got my first Dupont a couple of days ago:

S.T. Dupont Défi review

and I like it very much.

This will rival my Montblanc Starwalker Duoé as an "take it to work" pen because it seems to work as flawless as the Starwalker.

I have not tried any of the other brands (Caran d'Ache, Dunhill, Cartier).

Are there ANY Cartiers,Dunhills, Dupont or Caran D'Ache pens that are NOT CC fillers??

I actually would like to know--I may then be interested in them.

Not that I know of. But then I have nothing against C/C filler pens.

I also have :

Montegrappa White Nights Ltd. Edit. Sterling Rollerball

Pelikan Ltd. Edit. Caelum Fountain Pen (sun and planets - shades of deep blue)

LePine Graphyscaf The Ocean Pen fountain pen.

I bought The Ocean Pen thru Fountain Pen Hospital in NYC.

I have no complaints about FPH.

Their customer service was great.

However the pen was shipped directly to me from France.

The ocean themed display box and its contents were included, as well.

The bag of sand had broken open in addition to the box not being marked This End Up or anything and I could hear loose sand all over inside before opening it.

The pen was safe as it was in its own little plastic bag.....but what a mess.

The documentation for the authenticity of the pen was included, ...but NO Owner Manual !

This pen has a unique refilling design that should have a tool just for turning that section on the pen....but I had/have no detailed instructions.

(Is Montblanc the Only company that provides instructions with Each pen ?)

I requested an owner manual 3 different times, one of them thru Fountain Pen Hospital, but the most they could do was forward my request to the US LePine office, which one time sent a freebie miniature rollerball.....But again, NO Owner Manual.

It has been at least 2 years now and I never received anything.

I love the black and gold colored Titanic pen that they made, but I wouldn't buy a refill from them if that is how they ignore customers.

Good Riddance.

They need some lessons in Customer Service.

I hope others' experiences with LePine have been better than mine.

I guess I should comment on my experience I guess.

Basics, I have quite a few Montblancs and a few ST. Duponts.

The MBs include 149s, 146s, one 144, and a bunch of older models including celluloid 146s, 344 and 264, as well as a few of the two digit and three digit models from the 60s and 70s. Nibs run from fine to OB.

The ST Duponts are Fidelio/Olympio/Orpheo mid size models and one large Ellipsis. Nibs are medium and fine.

The Montblancs are all GREAT pens. They all work, they all are reliable, they all have nice nibs and a few have great nibs. Fit and finish on the Montblancs is superb.

On the down side. The caps do not post well on the 14X pens. The pens are all competent, but none are exciting.

The ST Duponts are also GREAT pens. They all work, are all absolutely reliable, they all have GREAT nibs, as smooth as a Sheaffer Balance or my old style Omas. The fit and finish on the ST Duponts can only be described as perfect. They simply have no faults.

Honestly, I can find no faults at all. They all post well, look great and add another dimension; in addition to sight and feel, they sound right.

My favorite is probably the Ellipsis. Most folk have heard about how St. Dupont tests the sound of their pens and lighters to make sure the 'Snick' they make when closing sounds right. Well the snap when I take it out of my pocket is the same as the sound of the cap clicking into place. The ST Duponts are a complete experience satisfying vision, feel and hearing.

None of your choices in the poll. MBs + other brands.

I expected that would be the case for many folk, and there are a brazillion other great pens, but I wanted to limit this to the pens from the Richemont Group and the two other long term low volume top tier pens. That is not a comment on any other makes, there are lots of great pens out there, but I wanted something manageable and somewhat limited.

I hope that some of the folk with the Dunhills, Caran D'Aches and Cartiers will tell us what it is that they like or dislike about them.

I have 1 Cartier, 1 Caran d'Ache and 2 Duponts. I don't have any Dunhills.

The Cartier I have is a nice pen. Excellent writer with a very smooth nib. The nib and feed look identical to MB's save the nib engraving. I asked someone in MB about this and they conrirmed that they used to make nibs and feeds for Cartier, but not any more. So basically the Cartier that I have is a MB with a Cartier outer design. The fit and finish is great.

The Caran d'Ache I have is one of the cheap ones with a steel nib. It's an ok pen, much like a Cross ATX. I haven't tried any of their high end pens.

The Duponts I have are both beautiful. Their finish is perfect. There is something appealling about the way the cap snaps. The nibs are smooth and write well when they write. I have been having trouble with both these pens. The skip and sometimes refuse to write completely unless I push ink into the feed from the converter. I had this problem with the first one I got, but I thought it must be that pen. But then when I got the other one, same thing. No amount of flushing and soaking or change of ink fixed the problem. So I didn't buy anymore Duponts, even though I like their designs.

Nice. What size is the Olympio/Orpheo/Fidelio? Is the purple the mail purple or the Platinum Placed model?

Have you tried cartridges and different converters with them?

Is the Cartier balanced with the cap posted?

The Casino Royale is the large size. The purple is Medium, and it's the mail purple. I've tried Cartridges, they seem to work better. The problem is still there but less frequent. Didn't try another converter.

The Cartier feels top heavy when posted, but generally, I don't post, so it's not a problem for me.

The Cartier looked like it would be top heavy in that model.

I have several of the medium sized Olympios and also have one of the full sized Olympios. Of the ST Duponts I have (wish I had a Vertigo) all have been totally reliable. I do post my pens and that is one place I think the ST Duponts shine. They post soundly and balance well.

That purple mail model is a lovely one. I have one of the large Placed Platinum models which I'd call violet.

Do you notice any difference between the metal and plastic sections?

I like plastic sections better, because they feel warmer and also less sliperry for long writing sessions. I like the Neo Classique President for the USB flash memory. Now they have a newer design which more interesting.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
