Chesterfield Ink to Diamine Cross-Reference

jleeper

Recommended Posts

I've created a Google spreadsheet that contains an attempt to cross-reference Chesterfield Inks back to their Diamine counterparts. Its in a Google spreadseet that you can view online, here is the link: Chesterfield to Diamine Cross-Reference

This is primarily based on JakobS' post in Chesterfield Inks? here on FPN. I added one conclusion about Chesterfield Night Sapphire that I came to independently. That conclusion may or may not be correct. As we get more information, I would be glad to update the spreadsheet.

Let me know if you have any questions/suggestions/ways that this info could be better displayed/distributed.

I have both Diamine Prussian Blue and Chesterfield Night Sapphire. These are definitely not the same inks. I believe that Night Sapphire is Diamine Blue Black.

That's what Josh from xfountainpens.com told me as well, Night Sapphire was Diamine blue black.

I haven't ordered yet, but many people here say that having Diamine ship from the UK to the US isn't that expensive. And their direct prices are very good; $8.37 for 80ml, $3.35 for 30ml. Postage $7.59. So if you want to order 4-5 bottles, the price looks pretty good. I'm sure there will be some cost on your credit card or from Paypal for currency conversion, but I don't that it will be that much.

I thought the Chesterfield ink from xfountainpens.com was a good deal at $6 and free shipping over $15. Probably was too good a deal; but at $7.99, I'm not sure its a very good deal at all.

Plus Diamine is having a 15% Easter sale on their website till April 6th for additional affordability!!

I thought Diamine Prussian Blue is considered a blue black, if but a little different from a traditional blue black shade?

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but this is good info ... I was looking for this cross reference to round out my Diamine collection on the cheap. Since then they've added a few ... anyone willing to take a gander what they are?

Antique Copper : I'm pretty sure it's Ancient Copper

Antique Crimson : Red Dragon maybe?

Antique Oxford : OMG I want it. (but what is it?)

Antique Yankee : ?

CRVs would be awesome!!

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Create a Ghostly Avatar and I'll send you a letter. Check out some Ink comparisons: The Great PPS Comparison

Don't know where to start?  Look at the Inky Topics O'day.  Then, see inks sorted by color: Blue Purple Brown Red Green Dark Green Orange Black Pinks Yellows Blue-Blacks Grey/Gray UVInks Turquoise/Teal MURKY

CRV = Co-Razy-View

You write on 1/2 of the page and your pen pal writes back on the other side of the page. You can each compare the same ink or different inks.

Antique Crimson: Crimson perhaps could be Monaco Red. It's hard to tell with the color sample on xfountainpens.

Antique Oxford: Midnight

Antique Yankee: Denim

The last two only really fit those to Diamine inks as they are nearly a Blue-Black, but Night Sapphire is Diamine Blue Black, plus each has a slight grey hue as well with Oxford being slightly "lighter" than Yankee. Those are just guesses and based on my monitor settings.

I ended up buying a bottle of Oxford just to see it up close and Teal which I've always wanted.

Have you gotten the Oxford yet?

I am curious what Diamine inks these new blues are.

Yep, got here yesterday. I'll try to remember and put up a scan. I guess I'll have to do a swab comparison with my other blues, so at least you have a relative reference.

I have the Oxford now as well. So far I'm disappointed with it. It has turned a wet-writing well-behaved pen into a hard-starting, finicky, skipping machine. I'm glad I only got the smallest bottle.

This is the first Chesterfield ink I've had that has been troublesome. The others all write really well for me.

  • 2 weeks later...

I did some comparisons of ink swatches last night under warm white fluorescent light and this morning in sunlight. I came up with some matches between Chesterfield and Diamine inks.

The Chesterfield name will be listed first, followed by the Diamine one.

Antique Oxford Majestic Blue

Antique Yankee Midnight

Capri Royal Blue

Cobalt Imperial Blue

Mahogany Saddle Brown

Night Sapphire Blue Black

Xircon Florida Blue

I'm a bit less certain about the following two. The two Diamine inks were the same hue as the Chesterfield ones, but they were a bit lighter, as if they had been less concentrated.

Sapphire Washable Blue

Sodalite Prussian Blue

I also did some looking at the Chesterfield Antique Copper, and I'm no longer sure it's the same as Diamine Ancient Copper. I have some writing samples written with Ancient Copper and when I look at it in the sunlight it doesn't really match Antique Copper.

Thanks stuartk for that cross reference. I ordered all the Antique colors as well but have not gotten around to test them out. Looks like I need to get Cobalt and Xircon on my next order.

I have just compared my bottle of Antique Copper vs my sample vial of Ancient Copper.

I feel that they are different. Does anyone else feel the same?

The Diamine is more red

The Chesterfield is more orange/brown

It different enough to my eyes to conclude they are actually not the same ink.

I've had exactly the same experience in two different pens with Antique Oxford. Glad to know I'm not the only one and encouraged to think it might just be this ink and not the whole Chesterfield brand.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
