West Des Moines "Pen Posse" Meeting

Recommended Posts

We (sdcurnow & GR10girl) stopped on the way through town to have a long lunch with Ryan Roossinck. I guess this counts as meeting #2 of the West Des Moines Pen Posse. Sat and ate lunch, talked shop and swapped pens. Anyone living anywhere close to West Des Moines should reach out and touch Ryan and get something a little more organized started. I can't keep coming all the way from California just to hold a meeting.

There are bunches of people in central Iowa (I know, some of you may be surprised at this!) that are pen people and could be persuaded to get together without too much arm twisting, but most of them aren't on FPN and just need a different mode of notification. If day and time fits, I'm up for a little 3 hour road trip to DM area.

I live in Ankeny and would love to get a large group together sometime. Just let me know when and where and I'll be there.

Y'all know that I'm game, and Sam's right...there's a handful of folks that we see pretty rarely on FPN (or not at all); if I knew how to reach out to them, I'd definitely do it.

(Plus we've got the added benefit that if we can get a big enough group, we can get on Omaha's radar; they've got a fairly steady group going to the monthly GTGs)

So...when's the next one?

Schedule permitting at work and all, I'd be interested if we got something going!

Does the Des Moines Pen Posse still exist? I'd like to get a Des Moines group started. We have a pen store (Quill and Nib) we should have a pen group!

Any interest?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
