Hello from Los Angeles

Hi all

My name is Leonardo Bravo, and I'm a recoverying fountain pen addict. After succumbing to the desire to buy a new pen almost every week (more than 2 years ago),

I have now recovered. Still have that monkey on my back, but now I can actually give some thought to what I'm going to buy, and then patiently wait for the "write" one to come.

I started out buying modern pens, but lately, other than a couple of Italian pens, I've been buying vintage. Just recently received a Waterman 52 with a stub nib, and hoping to use it for my entry in the handwriting contest.

I've been saving up for the LA Show next week. Hmm, what shall I buy?

Welcome!

What pen to buy?

Since you mentioned handwriting: how about trying to find one with an italic nib,

so you can feel the difference between that type and a stub?

Have fun!

It's me again: after having seen a sample of

your handwriting, I think you should look for flexible nibs as well!

A Big Welcome Leo! You'll love it here. Everyone is so nice helpful. I'm pretty new myself, but already I feel I'm getting to know some people.

Jimmy,

I think his avatar looks like a man sitting behind a desk??

Hi Leo and welcome to FPN :D

Yes, it is an addictive hobby but I am glad that you re-gained conrol of your buying habits--good for you!

As for what to buy in L.A., I would recommend making a short 'shopping list' of pens in which you may be interested. Try to find out the current price ranges for those items (check online or in pen books, if you have any) *before* the show, and don't forget that there is usually some room in which to move, price-wise, at pen shows. I usually ask dealers "What is your best price for this pen?", unless a pen is in a parts box.

Look around the show and write down pen prices (and the locations of the dealers' tables where you found the pens!), and try to resist the urge to buy the first example of the pen you want (unless it's something unusual/rare or cheap, etc.) as some other dealers at the show may have it for less money.... or with a nib that is more to your liking.

Hi everyone

The avatar is the Libra sign, but I like the idea of a man sitting behind his desk. I will be at the LA show this Sunday so I'll be on the lookout. I just noticed that it is raining, but a little rain has never stopped me. In fact, when it rains in LA, the speed limit goes up to 85 MPH...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
