I have a number of Auroras, some modern, some vintage, a number of Stipulas, a Montegrappa or two, some Visconti, a couple of Omas, so I'm no stranger to Italian pens. Last week I picked up a Lus Atomica Magica, read about it, disassembled it, cleaned it nicely. Now I have two questions. Does anyone have a photo showing the barrel tassie? The one I picked up has no tassie and I'm sure it came with one. Second question: the ink pellet dispenser and filler all work nicely (though no ink pellets available) but in the lower part of the filler is a small tapered plug (ivory and black) that moves in the filler and apparently does not interfere with taking up or discharging water. Does anyone on this forum know whether it was an integral part of the filler or something that got stuffed into it? I'll photograph the unit it it will help, but I'm hoping there's a quicker answer. Thanks.

I think that there are several different models with differnt tassie treatments. I have the Magica 300 and it has a tapered barrel that ends with a narrow gold toned metal plug that is flat on the bottom. My converter also contains a small object in the ink chamber. I believe this aided in mixing the ink once water was added to the pellet. By turning the pen end for end a few times the moveable object in the chamber would push the pellet about and agitate the ink. There is another fpn post about these:

perhaps there are more. I think these are neat pens and nice piece of pen history. I have anohter one in its package somewhere, I will check it for more info.

Thanks to both of you who responded. The pen is happily re-assembled, writes well, but still lacks an end tassie. Guess I'll have to pick one up next time I'm in Italy. Thanks again.

Hello Jack7770. This is the "LUS Atomica" pen I have. It is one of the many and many models that Mr. Umberto Legnani produced in the fifties in his factory in Saronno, near Milano (LUS = Legnani Umberto Saronno), where he registered more than 90 patents.

The name of this pen is "Atomica Magica 300". It is a piston filled pen, but it also has a reserve of pellets inside the piston itself and can be used with water (+ pellets) if ink is missing.

Inside the tank you can see the small plug: we can assume it is an original part of the pen and I guess its function is to help melting of pellets.

The barrel has no tassel: the cap of the piston\pills-dispenser comes out of the end of the barrel and one can push it. I do not know the exact function of this device; since it is red I suppose it is something connected with the end of ink: a kind of "ink rescue" (like in Aurora Riserva Magica), but I never tested it.

There was a metal cover (similar to the pushbutton of a retractable ballpoint pen) that went over the red cap and through the hole at the top of the barrel. This metal cap is often missing as it was not glued into place. The barrel end, with the metal plug, looked a lot like the barrel of the Aurora DuoCart.

In the Pentrace article on "The pens of Lus" by Giovanni Abrate he shows a Lus Atomica Magica converter, with a metal push rod within which a plastic container with the ink pellets is lodged. This converter is threaded at the front and is screwed on to the section, rather than pushed in. It is likely the very first converter that screws on to the section. I am looking to find a Lus Atomica Magica pen with this converter.

Also, Does anybody know if Lus made pencils to match the Atomica Magica?

I just found this one in a secondhand shop in Rome during my vacation there. It seemed a steal for €15, so I couldn't help myself. I'm still pretty new to fountain pens and all different fillings, so thanks @sztainbok  for the instructions! I got it to work! 

 

It was actually still full of pellets, it seems the previous owner only used the ink bottles that came with it (which I understand, they seem to have been quite beautiful inks!

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
