I seem to remember a NOS with original packaging 8440 "mapmaking" nib on eBay a few years ago that sold for perhaps $100 or more I think... that's what I call a supreme nib! I know some of you here all have them... I want one!

i have the 9048 and doesn't impress me. nor does the 9314M (i wish i had a 9314B). i enjoy my 9555, even if it's extra fine. it's not scratchy at all (at least mine isn't).

Everything I can tell you about it is solely from memory because I don't own one, but I think it's a very fine (probably XF or XXF or something) nib and has a white collar and the nib itself featurs the sunburst pattern and has some gold plating on part of the nib. Definitely a unique Esterbrook nib. I don't know anything about the 8xxx series, so I'm not sure if these features are exclusive to the 8440 or are found in all the 8xxx nibs. The few who own an 8440 will have to verify that I'm remembering this correctly... maybe they'll be nice enough to post a photo or two because I haven't seen one in a while and would love to see a good quality photo of one. :)

EDIT: I just found a picture on Richard's website. (link here) (along side a nice interview with Lisa. :)) You can tell just by looking at the photo how fine that point is! I'd still like to see some higher resolution photos if anyone has any.

Thanks for the tip....

I'd just picked up a @1950 Mercedies small pen with a flexible OF (didn't know it and the seller either luckily).

Some one's other writing tip said hold flexible nibs light, and it went from being real scratchy to being ok....

I'm hoping some day to send it to some one who knows what he is doing and perpaps doing a hair of smoothing in between the tines, so the nib will do magic.

Your tip has added a touch of flare to the my writing...I will have to see what ink shows up that nib.

Middle of next year I'll be worrying about Estie semi flex nibs.

I'm going to have to look up how to tell semi-flex or flex from normal nibs.

OK, you did it. I was just goin to sign off and to go bed...went looking through my box of old Estie stuff and found this. It's pretty well used, and doesn't have the white sleeve (sort of a red/black one, or else discolored from use). Hope I can upload it. Arghh. can't figure it out. Here's a link.

I just recently (days ago) bought my first Estie at an antique store. The sac is fine, and it was fitted with a 9668 nib in great condition. Writing with it daily now (PR Ebony Blue).

I am now hungry to try more nibs, particularly the tasty 9048 but also stubs (I love line variation).

If anyone has any nibs they care to part with, shoot me a PM. I don't have a lot of cash, but maybe we could work out a trade.

Thanks! I now see what the Esterbrook fascination is alllll about.

Happy Holidays,

Michael

Ok, sit in your sofa, put your foot in the center table, cross your hands back of your head, close you eyes......

Now tell me....¿which is the best of the best Esterbrook nib ever? ( just one).

Greetings from México.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
