Two questions: Lamy Safari or Al-Star, F or EF?

What would you choose? On Amazon, the prices are about the same for all 4 options in that list.

Neither, Vista! And the F nibs tend to be smoother than EF nibs..

I agree but I have to admit that I have a charcoal safari thats over a year old with a black EF nib and its pretty smooth for an EF. I wonder if all these problems are only affecting those of recent manufacture. I seem to be one of the lucky ones where I've never had a bad Lamy nib.

On Amazon, this is a good buy.

http://www.amazon.com/Lamy-Safari-Fountain...4602&sr=1-1

It does not come with super saver shipping, (shipping is around 6) but it says you get a free converter, which are around 5. So basically, you are getting a 1 dollar converter.

Hello!

I have just become crazy for Lamy fountain pens. I write with Extra fine and have had no problems. I currently have the Al-Star Raspberry courtesy of hanging out with CarolinaWriter during the Triangle Pen Show. I also have the Pink Limited Edition. I am awaiting the Lime Green Limited Edition and the Translucent. Did you know that for $7.50 shippping you can change out the nib? You can not have filled the pen with ink though. I say what one speaks to you?

I seem to be hearing a chorus

I prefer the EF (fines are more like medium in my book). No problem with smoothness. As to which one, that's a taste thing. I prefer the plain safari's to the Al Star but that's just me.

F, probably, but I've gone off EFs to some extent due to frequently having to write on less-than-ideal paper.

Have you tried both then?

Interesting. Like the poster one or two up said, I don't always have access to the best paper, so the F is ok though?

Yep.

EF is okay if you're using super high-quality paper, like Clairefontaine or Rhodia. Even then it's kind of scratchy, but it's to be expected. F should be fine even if you don't have the best paper. M will write pretty well on any paper, no matter how cheap, without complaint, but I think it would produce too wide and wet a line for you.

Here is a link to the paper I am using most of the time:

One of my Moleskines, the one that I use the most because it is pocket sized and lined, has that weird feather with my Pilot Vasritys, which have an M nib.

No, because the M nib on my vista writes like butter on any paper... trust me. the first one I had was doing so well... even when the feed failed, I kept the nib so I could outfit it onto my new one, which was equipped with a scratchy EF.

My F nib was decent, the M is way better.

it has a cartridge/converter. you can either pop a cartride in by removing the barrel, or you can fill from a bottle with a piston converter

Ah, I see on the site it says you can use a safari converter.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
