This mode of review is interesting in that it involves a large sample size, both physically and historically it would seem, and a consistent observer. Ah what am I saying, I just want to read the reviews and see the pictures of the pens I will never own. Good luck, and I'll be following the thread!

What a great idea! I look forward to popping every day and seeing whatcha got.

My collection is growing to the point where I personally feel its getting a little out of hand so I'll be offloading some real soon. (I seem to have a lot of cheapies I picked up when I knew no better!) I think I'd like to limit myself to around 25 max. I may have a go at his too.

Thanks Soapytwist

Not to worry... moved him to the appropriate place, like a pawn on a chessboard. Check!

Very nice work on the first entry, Soapy T. The nib looks a little peculiar, though... is it just the angle, or is the nib tip slightly bent? If it is, then that would account for the scratchiness. The line is fine but a little washed out in the main part of the lines. I wonder if that is the cause.

Anyway, I like your format and looking forward to the next one. :)

I thought the same when I saw the photo; I had a look with a loupe and it was partly the angle, but partly a slight bend (more downwards than sideways which I hadn't spotted). I've adjusted it, and the scratchiness has abated, but not the feeling that the ink is running to catch up with my writing. I'll have another go at seeing if I can increase the flow in about 29 days' time...

Well, he's on a roll... two reviews so far. Splendid coverage of that Cross Century.

There are a number of pens in your group photo that I'll be very interested to see. Do you have a list yet of each brand/model? Sequential order unnecessary, as I imagine the order will change depending upon your mood. :)

I'm curious about a few (see annotations):

I love this idea! And I'm inspired to think about attempting the same feat, 30 pens, 30 days.

Thinking, thinking.... (Don't know if I could manage 30. Hrm.)

Really good idea, though, soapy!

Quick replies to MYU's queries:

Kaweco? Yes; a fifties Sport. I reviewed it HERE so it may get bumped. And you never even pinned it in the Review Index...

Curious Cap Top: a Tropen Gold

Lamys: I left out a couple (12 FPs in total)

Curious pens: Waterman 52, Waterman Concord, thirties Onoto, twenties silver Onoto.

Wahl Eversharp? No; Swan Leverless and Swan eyedropper

Parkers: I own more Parkers than anything else but I think only four made it through to the thirty (lots of reviews up already for some of these)

Red ring: English (Conway Stewart)-made Esterbrook Relief

Hah! I knew I'd seen a review of a vintage Kaweco somewhere! I was looking for it when I did my comparison, but couldn't find it. Of course, mine's the v16 model, and is not the same as yours, so I may have to add a solo review of mine, at some point.

Keep up the good work! This is an excellent idea for a thread, though I expect it'll cause Gary some headaches for the review index...

I do that intentionally, so I won't appear as a perfectionist that everyone would envy.

Nah, I just missed it somehow. :bonk: I think January wasn't a good month for me. Sorry... Index updated.

Nice Lamy CP1. I never knew they made a platinum plated version... I guess that might have been the inspiration to make a platinum plated Persona, as it is a very nice look... a little softer than outright chrome.

The reviews are looking great, soapytwist. I'm glad to see you're still going full steam ahead. :)

Soapy - Apologies! I get all over enthusiastic sometimes. But seeing as I won something (first time ever), please can I have that CP1 as my prize? :P

And by the way, you should have said 'roll' instead of 'step' :ltcapd:

MYU - The 'he' that you moved is a 'she' :roflmho:

The platinum-plated one is still available - for example at Swisher. I think it may have been the other way around and the Persona inspired them to give the CP1 the same treatment.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
