The Varuna Vishal is a great pen!

I recently traded, and for those who know my habit of trading, for a Varun Vishal, new from AllWriteNow. I was curious, both because I'm an Indian fiction fan and love my Wality 69. This pen is wonderful! It's large all right...just short of 6" capped. But, it's surprisingly light, very well balanced, and the nib (from Wality) is somewhere between fine and medium and has just a touch of tooth, which I like. Mine is in the "bakul", essentially unpolished, finish. It looks very much like the Lamy2000 finish, down to the disappearing seam. Pictures are at allwritenow.net, with which I am not affiliated in any way, except now as a customer.

The only problem is that, as an eyedropper, you have to fill it all the way to prime it. It's a big fill, and I'm afraid it just took over the rotation for the rest of the summer. We should all have such problems.

If you follow the filling instructions Steve has posted on allwritenow.net, you don't have to fill the pen up all the way. The part about turning the pen point-down before you screw the barrel in the last few threads does the priming, no matter how much ink is in the pen. That said, you probably don't want to start out with the pen less than a quarter full, or you will get a quick introduction to the habit any large-capacity pen may have of leaving big drops of ink on your paper.

I'm sure you'll like it, I have a brown Varuna Rajan and is a nice writer.

My only "complaint" is it lays down a very fine line, and with the huge quantity of ink it can hold that means it takes a lot of time to empty it.

Also with so much ink inside, I don't dare to fill it with (near-)bulletproof inks.

I have a green Vishal (bakul finish, with vintage Sheaffer nib) on the way from Steve, and I just can't stand.

I have also several other indian ebonite EDs, and I like them a lot. :cloud9:

thanks! I thought one filled it to the base of the threads, then turned it upside down over the bottle. Well, I'll try it in a few months when this fill is done...

Glad to hear all the praise for the Vishal. Might be my next pen.

I love mine. I have a polished black with the upgraded nib ground to a medium stub. Its a great pen although a little dry but its very happy filled with HOD.

Nothing sells fountain pens like the Fountain Pen Network! I've just started the process to get one of these myself. The danger is that because they're so reasonable, I'm tempted to get two! :headsmack:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
