I have a Reform and a Dollar pen. Both are pretty good value, and pretty good writers, although you might have to smooth the nibs or adjust the flow. I did have to fiddle with the nibs on both pens a bit - I found them a bit dry for my taste. The Dollar pen is a more comfortable size (for me), and has a greater ink capacity. The Reform is slightly longer, but a bit too skinny for optimum comfort.

 

I would buy more Dollar pens, any time. I'm also interested in trying the Wality, which seems to be highly regarded by people who have one.

I did buy mine, tuned, from JJBlanche. It is one of my best writers and favorite pens, and possibly best quality and value for the price. I happen to like a narrow pen, so for me that aspect is just a bonus. And for me, it holds plenty of ink.

That's where I got mine as well. The flow is fine and the nib is smooth. It's a bit narrow for me to write with for a long time, but it's a great pen for the price. I agree that it's not semi-flex. If you give it some heavy pressure, you get some line variation out of it, but you have to really give it an effort.

How thick is this pen? Is it around the size of the Pilot 78G? because I consider that to be small.

The Reform is definitely thinner than the Pilot 78G. I don't have a ruler on hand, but I'd say the Reform is probably only around 3/4 as thick as the 78G.

I also bought one from JJBlanche and had mine tuned to an F nib. I really enjoy the pen and find it to be a very good writer. I don't typically carry an FP with me when I travel except for a Varsity. After three weeks on the road, I picked up my 1745 and it immediately started with a perfect line. I really do consider the 1745 a great value!

I got a 1745 as a present from a fellow FPNer and I absolutely love it!

It holds plenty of ink, writes a good smooth line (very slightly dry but I like that. Similar to Lamy Safaris for dryness) and is flexible enough to give decent line variation (springy is a good description)

Its about 3/4 the width of a 78g and about 5-7mm shorter (guestimate)

 

They are great value for money. I'd buy one from the guys here and have it tuned to your liking. If you aren't too keen at the end of the day, you've not lost much, and you can always offer it on the PAy-it-Forward sub-forum for a newbie to try!

I have a Reform 1745 purchased from JJ Blanche, who also ground the nib to an XF. The is smooth and a joy to write with. The ink supply I find to be okay and the pen is a wet writer. The nib has a bit of flex which is a plus.

 

The only drawback for me is that the pen is a touch too slender. Even so, it is in my regular rotation loaded with Noodler's Standard Green.

 

If you get one, I'd purchase from someone like JJ who will tune the pen up for you. My guess is you won't want to just toss it into the gym bag. Use your Hero 616 or 329 for that.

I also got mine from JJBlanche....

 

I get quite a bit of line variation and I thought it would be categorized as a semi flex... The only time it can keep up with me (which isn't very fast) is when it is used as a dip pen instead of a self filler. I will post a pic of the writing soon.

I have a choice between this and a Broad nibbed pilot 78G (because I have one already and it writes great, but I want to give it to my older sister because she likes the line variation).

 

The reform would definitely be a gamble, as I don't know if it would fit my hand.

I have both and I like Hero 616 better than Reform 1745. Both are cheap and light pens. If they were eyedroppers I would love them even more. Hero 616 can be modified into an ED so therefore it wins. :P (Hero bladder is pain in the arse to clean)

Agreed... that needs some serious work. I just take off the metal bar/sac covering and squeeze it vigorously until it gets clean. Seems to get the job done.

 

So maybe I should get another pack of 616's? Wait no, I already have them... 329's?

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
