Montblanc Dostoevsky - review

My 15Th Montblanc Writers Edition (two more and I'm done yay)

Had few chances to get it in the past but some other WE I wanted more was always in the way.

Well the time has come and I got it.

I did held it in my hand and knew what to expect.

This is a rather sober pen with its all black body and gold filled trim.

The two things that do make this pen stand out from other MB black pens are the etching on the barrel and the blue round stone at the end of the clip.

Sparkly jewels don't always work on pens but this one just like the Woolf really needs it, and it makes it easier on the eye.

The most interesting part of the pen is the etching on the barrel. Its got

OXOXOXOXOX going up and down and gives the barrel a bit of a rough feel to it.

http://i516.photobucket.com/albums/u330/alfa170a/DSC00507.jpg

The two gold filled rings on the cap and the clip ring also cheer up the pen a bit and gives it a respectful yet elegant look to it.

On the top of the clip there is a wave like lines and the XOXO motif is also drawn on all 3 rings on the cap.

A smaller ring is at the bottom of the barrel and the XOXO is also drawn there.

I must admit the design of this pen is much more complex and interesting then I though from a quick look to it.

I must admit I start to like it more and more.

How does the pen write ?

Well all the dome cap slender barrel WE's are good writers and this one is not an exception. It is light weight and well balanced which works great in my hand.

Curvy section that let my fingers rest in it and prevent it from sliding, simple and effective-just the way I like it.

The pen comes with MB classic ink view window, I love this feature. For me its more then the practical side of it, for me its a classic part of many MB pens. MB is not the only one to use this but I expect to have it in their pens if the design allows it.

The nib is to my joy a F nib. And even though it is a bit on the fat side it is still a sweet nib. Very smooth and with good feedback.

The nib has a very interesting pattern etched on it which works with the etches on the rings on the pens.

Of course the pen comes with MB standard piston filler and it does its job as always very well. Its smooth, fun to use and take a nice amount of ink into it.

Summery

I got this pen because I need to finish the WE collection and not because I liked it so much. Mind you I do like it and love all the WE's but some I like more then the others but when looking deeper into the pen and its design I must admit I see the pen in a new light.

The Dostoevsky is very very elegant and beautiful but it doesn't do the job for you. You really have to look at all the small details to really appreciate this pen. Only then you can really enjoy it and there really is a lot to enjoy.

As a writer this pen is great !!!

Its light weight, well balanced and has a wonderful nib.

Just like me Tzutzik was a bit cold to the pen but after a second deeper look he fell in love with it too.

Goodguy,

The quotes I have selected from your review really sum up this WE for me. It is not flashy like many other WEs, but it has an understated classic elegance that reminds me of MB's vintage pens. The engraved chasing on the barrel is also very appealing.

great review thanks for sharing :)

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Wow, 15 WE's you got? Thanks for sharing your hobby!

It's not strange that many WE's are black, the way the writers describe the dark world.

The gold of the sun suits the black, however.

That is a gorgeous pen. I'm generally neutral toward MBs, but this one catches my interest.

(Sadly, with interests rates in the cellar, it would be a very, very long time before I would be considering such a thing.)

I came here for the pictures and stayed for the conversation.

I love the looks of the Dostoevsky! Simple and complex at the same time. Glad you like it, and that you're close to the finish line!

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks for the great review and photos. Last year it was a toss up for me between this one and the Dickens, I went with the Dickens. After your wonderful review I need to go back and correct that situation. I see one of these in my future.

And there is an exam that you have to write before they let you walk out of the Boutique with the pen!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
