Does anyone know if there will be calligraphy classes on Saturday or Sunday? Preferably Copperplate, but any will do jus for the experience.

I just spoke to Bob Johnson and they have 4 hour calligraphy classes scheduled for Friday. There is a fee for the classes on Friday. He said they plan to offer some free calligraphy classes over the weekend but no scedule is firmed up yet on when they will be held. Hope this helps.

Best wishes,

Are they going to update the links? The show isn't that far off and it would be nice to know if there are shuttles etc available.

Will be there, my third. Plan to leave all plastic at home :)

Great idea. Last year, I ended up making 2 trips to the ATM in the lobby. :-)

Hey there Ryan, we're neighbors.

I plan on attending this year with my 2 oldest sons. Wish we could arrange a hook up time with some of my FPN friends. Somehow I never got to do this last year. :(

I wonder if they plan on doing any pen repair workshops? I want one of the sons to take a vac-fill class. :)

We'll miss the Washington show when they pry my credential from my cold dead hand!

The 2005 version was our first show, and it contributed significantly to the slippery slide (or leap off the cliff!) that has occurred since. Fantastic people, accommodating hotel, great space (except for small room lighting - which has improved over the last few years), unbelievable pens and selection, more information than anyone can take in over four days, and did I mention fantastic people?

I was thinking of doing the Copperplate workshop on Friday morning. Has anyone ever worked with Deborah Basel before or done the workshops? Thanks!

The workshops are all great although I have never attended any of them because the thought of being out of "circulation" for hours at a time is painful. :gaah: I wish they could hold the workshops either before or after hours so that we could attend AND be able to spend every possible second at the show! After all, I am assuming (yes, I know I shouldn't) that most people are staying at the hotel and would be available to attend a workshop at strange hours...heck, they could even have a breakfast workshop!

I have always attempted to be able to have my cake and eat it too! :bunny01: :bunny01:

Actually, I was even thinking of the classes/workshop as a defense against possible overspending! But there's no guarantee it'll be effective.

Not only is that no guarantee, last year we left for a while to have lunch. Can you imagine what it feels like to "flash" eat? :roflmho:

I enjoyed meeting you and several other FPNers near the ink table last year.

I'll be back at the ink table around 2PM on Sat the 8th.

I don't know if anyone here has proposed a time and place to say hello, but I'd enjoy a chance to meet others from the FPN at the show.

Yeah, the prophylactic Copperplate class ends at 12:30 so 2:00pm should be an okay meeting time unless my soul is absorbed by the Pen show in the 1 and 1 half hour interval......

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
