Review: S.T Dupont Shaman Extra Large Size Pen

 

This is the second Dupont pen I am reviewing this week so I will leave out the basic characteristic, which I already stated on my review for Casino Royale but focus on the characteristic of this pen. Personally I think this is the “perfect white pen” for everyday use and for formal black tie events. The Shaman edition, just like Casino Royale, uses the Olympio model as its base and put a twist in the design. The Shaman is made to commemorate Native American, the word itself means “he who knows”. A Shaman is a theologian, medicine man, scholar or poet (Dupont web site), the Shaman is the guardian of the Native American soul.

 

The body of this pen is made from pearl accent lacquer and mother of pearl inlays. It is visually stunning. At the time when I purchase this pen there were not many pens out there that have this visual effect. Due to the success of this pen Dupont has introduced a regular version of this pen, which has the same pearl accent lacquer. The trim of this pen is made from palladium finish with engraving that mimic Native American’s clothing.

The nib is fitted with 18k single tone palladium plated. The nib is manufacture by Dupont, which is rare compare to many other well know pen manufacture who uses others to manufacture their nib unit. The nib is very smooth and glides across paper without much feed back. I also shot some comparison photos on the nib, personally I rather have over size nib than tiny nib especially if the body of the pen is large. The nib and the body have to be proportionate. In this case Dupont has done a wonderful job on the size of its nib relative to the size of the pen. Another feature of the nib is that it covers the feed when you turn the nib sideways. It adds this elegance feeling to the pen.

Another feature that is unique to only Dupont pen is the clicking sound when you put the pen cap back on. Most other fountain pen brand uses turn and twist mechanism for its cap but Dupont uses push and pull mechanism. The push and pull mechanism is very smooth, I love it when the cap starts to slides slowly about 1 cm before it hits the body and when it hits the body you will hear a nice click sound.

 

Last thought, the Shaman is differently a very unique pen because first of all there are not that many white pens out there, secondly there are not that many white pens with “white pearl lacquer” on it. Therefore, I do recommend people to get it.

 

I know many people have questions about the size of Extra-large Dupont pens so I took few comparison pictures with my MB 146 and MB 144. I use MB pens because their measurement is easy to find on the web.

yup CC filler. Piston filler has its downside. Three of my piston filler pens went back to manufacture because it became really hard to turn.

It's really nice! My preference would have been something like a white section, too, perhaps separated from the body by silver trim...but that's just my own take. Might be tricky, with that material, anyway! Enjoy it! :)

You will like your. Personally I prefer the extra large pen because of wider barrel. which one are you planning to order or waiting the price for?

I think I know what you mean. If they lacquer the metal section the clicking mech might now work. I think it needs metal to metal contact to make that sound.

Two years ago when I met one of the representative from Dupont she told me that Dupont has paten this "clicking" sound and that is why no other brands can manufacture it.

No it is the 146 and the 144 right next to it. The extra large is about 146 size but is wider at the grip. If you look at the first photo you can see the Dupont pen almost cover the 146 in width.
