TGW - The Ghost Writer Reviews the Danitrio Takumi

Here is a short review of the Danitrio Takumi. I featured the pen in photographs earlier in the Photography subforum here but I did another reshoot after writing the review. I would encourage viewing the review in 100% to see how the nib writes and the ink (darkened Pelikan Brown) performs.

Hope folks find it useful.

The review was written on this paper I found in a stationers here. Quite expensive for 30 sheets but its great to write on and use as correspondence paper.

Wonderful pen -- but your photos and review overshadow it! Thanks for posting this.

Yes, indeed! I'm also drawn to this color, strange for me to say this for the color beige, but "restful" comes to mind.

Thanks Doug.

Thanks! I think the colour is very unusual and did not sit right with me at the start. I have since learnt to love it for the odd reason that it reminds me of my cafe latte and that its a tone not seen before on other pens - even rare ones. Its not even featured on Danitrio's website. So I guess I lucked out on a rare find! :-)

Yes, it would be right to describe it as 'restful'. Its not sharp, loud or bright like the orangey red urushi of my Nakaya. So I do like the contrast between the two.

I like the color very much. Thanks for posting some great photos.

You are most welcome! :-)

That penmanship is beautiful... how long did it take you to write like that?

Not sure whether you meant if I took a long time to write the review or how long I took to learn how to write like that. I wrote the review in about 10-15 minutes. I write like that all the time. I used a fountain pen at university back in the mid 80s and developed a personal handwriting style that I could still read my notes when I revised! :-)

I never did like my own handwriting until my wife and I went for a long holiday in UK (1993) and we dropped into Harrods to window shop. We stopped at the Parker booth and the wonderful salesman showed me their new Duofold collection and let me try their new Medium Italic nib. When the ink hit the paper, somehow the nib made my writing look good that my wife whipped out her credit card and bought me the pen on the spot without even asking me (trust me - buying a fountain pen in Harrods is not what I call affordable). I still tease her that she bought the pen because the salesman was a good looking honey tongued salesman that did not stop complimenting her! LOL

I still have and use that Duofold Green marble with Medium Italic. Its my pride and joy with great sentimental value.

Ever since, I try to use the medium Italics whenever I can. Honestly its very hard to locate a nib style that shows off your best handwriting. Having discovered its a medium Italic, its not an easy nib to find. So when I found a Danitrio with it I had no problem in taking it home. Although admittedly - my wife asked - was I going to neglect the Duofold. I told her - NEVER!

BTW - I even trolled the internet to buy online a spare medium italic nib for my Parker Duofold at quite a hefty price but it was well worth it. Parker no longer sells Duofold with Medium Italic unfortunately.

So - I will be keeping my eye out for other Danitrios with Medium Italics in the near future. ;-)

Harry...you're a class act on all fora......watches, photo and now pens.

If you get a chance, try a Stipula 0.9 italic nib....it's a smooth(cursive) medium italic nib that you might enjoy! I know I like mine very much.

Warmest Regards,

Ron

Hi Ron

Thanks so very much for the recommendation.

There aren't much Stipula dealers here but will ask around to see if they have the 0.9 Italic. I love the old Ebonites from Stipulas some years ago. But now they are so much more expensive.

A very classic-looking and understated pen -- beautiful!

Indeed! Thanks!

  • 3 years later...

Thanks for the review.

The beige looks really nice. I would like to see a beige Mikado (and own one).

Good stuff! thumbup.gif

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
