My history with fountain pens:

I remembered trying to resurrect my mom's Sheaffer and another brand discovered from my parents' drawer. No luck. :(

In high school, late 70s, my classmates have been purchasing nicer ballpoint pens but I purchased a Pilot fountain pen. Only 2 students in our class used the same exact pen.

In college, I probably either cracked the barrel of the Pilot pen or lost it. Sometime in the late 80s, my cousin gave me her Parker 45 she used in college and started using it at work. I remembered dropping it on its nib and broke it. I sent it to Parker and they replaced the nib with a fee. (I thought it was lifetime warranty)

I lost the Parker 45 and have bought 2 unknown models of fountain pens: Parker and Cross. Mostly from a sale at a big box office supply store. I miss those small stationery stores.

This time, thru the interent, I encountered 2 websites that have people interested in fountain pens, namely thedrawingclub.net and moleskinerie.com. I bought a Lamy Safari XF from pendemonium, but it was skipping. I exchanged it with a fine point and it worked out great. I also have a Pelikano Jr that I've used for general purpose writing. The Pelikano had never skipped a beat.

I just recently ordered 2 Pelikan M200 and just bought a Parker 51. :) :)

Glad to be here

Welcome and I agree with your choice in the Lamy. I bought one two days ago and liked the fine point because the extra fine was a bit scratchy.

Thanks for welcoming me.

Regarding the Lamy X-Fine, I appreciate your reply. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one. I also have a medium nib and that is so smooth on paper.

Pendemonium is a user-friendly store. They quickly exchanged my pen. They also suggested that I prime the pen with soap and water, but that didn't work either.

The only complain I have with Lamy Aluminums is that they dent and scratch easily, but it's a workhorse for me. It stays in my jeans pocket all the time and it gets banged around a lot on the desk.

Isn't there something satisfying about putting some "wear and tear" on a much used and much loved item? (wives not included). I am sure the pen doesn't mind being with you all the time and each meaningful scratch just makes the pen more uniquely yours.....ok have I gone too far this time? lol

TNS,

In my area, I don't seem to find anyone that are into FP. I discovered a Yahoo group online that has a So, California chapter. I think they have a quarterly meeting in Pasadena. It's under the umbrella of Pen Collectors Association something.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
