Can't Figure out My Duke Esteem

Oh geez...I feel like a complete idiot :headsmack: ...I bought a Duke Esteem from eBay, brand new. It arrived today and I can't figure out how to ink it!! I assumed (incorrectly?) that you twist off the barrel to expose the cartridge...or possibly twist the top (like a Pelikan) but neither budge!!! Have I got a bum Duke or is there something I'm missing??

Help....

From what I can find, most Duke pens seem to be C/C types, so the barrel has to unscrew from the section -- but I certainly wouldn't force it if it won't move with reasonable finger torque. I presume you either received no information sheet, or it's in Chinese?

I believe the duke esteem is aerometric, but even if it's c/c the barrel should twist off, so what Zeissikon said.

I forced it... ... with a pair of pliers (I can almost hear the collective gasps from the forum). Fortunately I didn't wound it, but thanks to the advice at least I knew something was supposed to twist. Btw, it's inked...what a great pen! I had taken advice from the FPN and purchased it, figuring for the price if it didn't work out so what -- and frankly it could become a top pen! I'd totally recommend this pen.

Was it cross-threaded or just put on very, very tightly? And what kind of filling system does it have? Inquiring minds want to know! :)

I came here for the pictures and stayed for the conversation.

I have two Duke Esteems and they fill like the Hero 330's and 616's with the little aerometric push bar...if I remember right it has the duke logo emblazoned on the part that you depress to fill the pen...really good writing pen for the $10 I paid for it

It was cross threaded and it has the bladder that you squeeze to draw up ink...kind of cool actually!

Absolutley a nice pen and you're completely correct in your description. I'm really enjoying the pen for the whopping $9.99USD plus S&H that I paid for it...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
