Quick intro about me: I live in Michigan and go to collge at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, MI. I don't currently own any fountain pens but the research is happening for buying one.

Pam Braun in Detroit is the best shop to buy from in MI. She has best prices, and will ship out same day to your doorstep.

My stuff arrives in Midland, next day.

Thanks, I will definitely keep that in mind. I bought a Pilot Varsity pen today to see how I like using a fountain pen before I actually spend too much money.

Hey Charlie. Sid from Ann Arbor here.

Since you are at Ferris State U., you ought to go and see Prof John Cullen in the English Dept. he is a fountain pen enthusiast, and I bet he could give you a good advice. Best of luck

if you see John, tell him Sid from down in Wolverine land says hello.

Welcome.

I have a brother-in-law who graduated from Ferris many years ago (I'm a West Michigan ex-pat who has been returning regularly to the area because of a family illness).

I can second the Pam Braun kudos. I visited the shop in person for the first time two weeks ago. I dropped some bucks but also had a pleasant surprise trying out an inexpensive Pilot Knight. It looks, feels, and writes like a much more expensive pen. I've used it for a few days now and am impressed with it. You might want to research it, too.

According to the Internet there is a pen shop in downtown Grand Rapids. I hope to get to in the next few weeks and will report to the forum.

I think I will actually go talk to John Cullen. He one of the advisors to the Honors Program here at Ferris and I am in Honors.

Hello and welcome to FPN! I'll chime in with my support for Pam Braun (usual disclaimer). You really should drop in on her store - she's very helpful and tops to deal with.

I will definitely keep her in mind when I get over to that side of the state. With gas prices where they are, my truck isn't the friendliest beast on the road for those longer trips. For now, I think I will stick with more local places, like Grand Rapids if/when I go to a place in person.

Howdy and welcome to the FPN from a fellow Michigander. I am sure that you will love this place and vast amount of information we have to offer here. :D

Sincerely yours,

Hi,

Welcome to FPN from another Michigander (Michiganian always sounded better to me, though), and welcome to the world of fountain pens - you'll find it's slowly but surely addicting and, to paraphrase that that old commercial, "bet you can't have just one!"

I know loads of people at Ferris State - it has the best automotive technology school in the state, and I've had lots of pleasant dealings with folks there.

And, if I may be allowed a shameless plug, The Pear Tree Pen Company, an internet retailer based in Ann Arbor, Michigan (and, it just so happens, it's my company!) has prices that rival that "other" seller others have mentioned. And unlike that vendor, I accept credit cards and PayPal.

Shameless plug mode off.

I just went out for a snack
I was feelin' famished
And then I vanished...

Not bad so far. Writes fairly smoothly even though I think the nib is too wide.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
