I am a relatively new member to the FPN, and have found it to be very informative and enjoyable. I've had a few fountain pens over the years, and recently have been getting some more.........sound familiar? Really enjoying some esterbrooks and other relatively inexpensive pens that I have gotten on ebay and the marketplace here. We live in East Hampton, NY, which is far from any pen stores, so the internet is a requirement. We're about 2 hours from NYC and had the chance to shop at the Fountain Pen Hospital last week...........bought my first Pelikan there, a blue marbled 200 with a medium tip that works well with Private Reserve Plum. I look forward to being an active member here.

welcome to the board of loonies who love their pens. Now that you have a pelikan, you must look into a variety of nibs for that baby. go to richardspens.com and drool over all the nibs you can get fro your new pen. then you have to get into vintage--my particular love. aren't you nostalgic for a pen that you remember from childhood--or are you too young. ah well the world id opening up to you now. welcome to the addiction.

Hello and welcome!

 

I've been fortunate to spend some time out in the Hamptons every once in a while (my cousin has a house on Dune Road in West Hampton) - what a cool place to live and practice law.

 

I think your experience with fountain pens most likely mirrors that of others here - starting with one or two, the interest grows, get a few more, interest becomes obsession and, voila!

 

By the way, if you want some inexpensive fountain pens that will wow the socks off you, look into Lamy. My $20 Lamy Safari writes better than some of my pens literally costing 10x the price and it is as reliable as they come. I've left it sitting for weeks and it starts right up (write up?) without a moment's pause the second the nib touches the paper.

Welcome. I'm in Northern California and the nearest pen store is 3 hours away in San Francisco so I can relate. Without the internet (and Ebay) I'd have an old Shaeffer school pen and some cartridges.

Have the same experience with the Shaeffer office model cartridge filled FP, steel nib, metal body reliable as anything. never skips, always true to the touch and sturdy for travel and roughing it. Great stuff!

Welcome. I also enjoy shopping at the FPHospital. I especially enjoy their price guarantee! If we can ever get a group together in Manhattan, perhaps you would care to join us? Months ago, I was attempting to get a group to descend en masse on FPHospital and then to go to lunch in one of the many restaurants in lower Manhattan. If we can't get this idea off the ground, plan to be there during their next pen show..probably in December....

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
