Sheaffer Balance Feed broken...

Recently bought Sheaffer balance Vac-fill, and I think the feed is broken :headsmack:, no idea what I could do to fix it, is it even fixable or will I need a replacement? Also the Vacuum fill isn't working, how would I go about mending that? I don't have much money to spend on expensive repairs....

Thanks!

The feed it definitely broken and can not be repaired....

If you have never worked on a Sheaffer vac filler, I do not recommend trying it... I send all mine to a professional

If you purchased this pen on eBay and it was advertised as good, I would demand a refund...

Well, the thing is I got it for only $20, and it's an oversize, so I was hoping I could salvage something from it. If I got a replacement feed (somehow) could replace the feed?

I would send it to Ron Zorn or Richard Binder who could do the complete repair and provide the proper feed for the pen....

The filler unit still needs to be repaired and that is not a job for a newbie or even some experienced restorers....

That is why all of mine go to one of them...

All right, I guess I'll have to cough up the money and get the pen properly repaired. Wouldn't want to damage it more...

What you show in your picture is not uncommon with Sheaffers. The wall of the feed is rather thin between the fins of the collector, and if pulled or stressed they break, leaving a piece of the feed insert sticking out. It's also precisely why you should NEVER try to pull the nib and feed out of a Balance.

The feed needs to be replaced. Both Richard Binder and I have a good supply of NOS feeds in stock, so either of us can supply one as part of a restoration.

An OS Balance for $20.00 - that's a great deal, even with a broken feed. Get it restored as per Tom's suggestion and you will have one really great pen for a very good price, even with the restoration.

Great find.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
