Diamine Claret

This ink really surprised me. I don't like pink or cerise. I was very into pink during my early teens and haven't been able to cope with any forms of pink on clothes [on me] or interior [in my home] since. But this dark pink/cerise ink is the exception that confirms the rule. I got some free samples from Diamine and thought I'd better try it and I'm very happy I did. I will write letters to my mum and some friends with this ink or maybe use it when I draw birthday cards. This is not an oversweet dark pink - more on the happy, playful side. I like it.

As all Diamine inks that I have tried so far this is a very well behaved ink. The flow is excellent - nor too dry or to wet - the shading is very good and brings out the temperament in this ink. The only thing I miss with the Diamine inks is that they are not bulletproof. In all other aspects they belong to my favourites. I like my everyday inks to be bulletproof since I like to highlight my notes. It comes both in cartridges (at least if you order directly from Diamine) or 30 ml (from Diamine) bottles or 80 ml bottles. Great value for the money.

Ohhhhh pretty..... Do you happen to have Herbin's Rose Cyclamen for a comparison?

While not within my normal range of colors, that looks like a good one for a cheery change of pace.

AFAIK, Herbin Rose Cyclamen is a much brighter pink.

I got a sample of Diamine Claret from Pear Tree Pens, and liked it a lot. It's on my list of inks to buy. Actually, I like most Diamine inks I've tried.

Thank you for your review.

Regards,

Ray

Thanks, dandelion, for this excellent review. I love Diamine Claret. I keep it in a little vintage Waterman 52 1/2 which has a nice flexible nib. The funny thing about this ink (or is it something about the pen?) is that when the ink is wet on the paper, it looks like a true red. As it dries it changes to the lovely color in dandelion's writing sample.

Thank you, Soki, they are lovely, well behave pinks, being Rose Cyclamen a bit less saturated but true rose pink. Is one of those situations where you want to have them both.

Can you add a comparison scan with Arabian Rose or Ottoman Rose or Shah Rose?!?!

Interesting. My bottle of Claret is much closer to the scan of Rose Cyclamen. I added a couple drops of Aurora black to the bottle to get a darker color (which I prefer.) The darker mix is pretty close to the Claret shown here.

Thanks Soki for the comparison with Herbin's cyklamen. I might get into pink for the first time in 15-20 years, which causes a slight identity crisis...

My experience is the same as Judybugs; the colour deepens and changes when it dries. Thanks also for kind feedback!

I wish my Diamine Claret looked like any of these photos or scans. For me, it's a much lighter, brighter pink.

Now, generally, I loathe pink, but I still kind of like this ink... but I'm thinking of it more for mixing. It's a little hard to take straight. Maybe I need to try it in another pen.

The shading is lovely, though, and I do enjoy the way it changes colors as it dries.

i love this ink and use it the whole time im my platinum pocket pen. It actually writes very well on any kind of paper (cheap or not) including moleskine but that is probably also due to the fine nib. its the colour i use the most next to pelikan blueblack.

Hi Dizzypen,

I have given both my Ottoman Rose and Shah Rose away, so am not able to provide comparison scans. However, the Claret is closest to Ottoman Rose (that's why I gave it away - doesn't dry as quickly as the Claret). Shah Rose is less saturated compared to both the Claret and Ottoman Rose. Sorry I cannot comment on Arabian Rose.

Soki

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
