Hello from WA

I'm a newbie from the "dry side" of WA, meaning east of the Cascades. I grew up in Seattle, two hills over from the U-dub. I have two siblings who were Dawgs. I have lived in the Columbia Basin for 27 years. It's where my husband and I raised our three kids. I am a grad student in Env Science at WSU. A Cougar in a family of Dawgs.

I've been writing with fps for years. My current collection includes 1 lamy safari with Levenger gemstone green ink, 1 Lamy vista with Levenger smoky ink, 2 Lamy Al-stars - one with blue ink and one with pink ink, 4 Phileas fps - with turquoise, purple, reddish, and blue ink. I also have a Pelikan M200 with Noodlers brown ink and a Pelikano Jr with Noodlers Apache sunset ink. I also have a collection of Pilot varsity disposable fps left over from my substitute teaching days. I could write with a fp and if it was stolen, which happened regularly, it was no big loss. I prefer the fps with larger diameter barrels. The Pelikan M200 writes nicely, but it's too skinny.

The 3k after my name is for the weight hammer I throw in Masters track and field competitions. (And yes, I use a fp to record my results and personal bests.)

Welcome Sharon! It sounds like you have a nice little collection going already. Glad to have you here.

Does throwing the hammer keep your fingers supple for fountain pen use? :)

Welcome aboard. May I ask which 2 hills away from U-dub you were? I'm over in Wallingford, right by Dicks on 45th (which I think was there 27 years ago).

Nice collection you have there, though it looks like it could use a vintage pen or two. ;)

So if you have a lot of ink,

You should get a Yink, I think.

Actually the two hills are north - I grew up in View Ridge. BUT - I know the Dick's on 45th - when my Dad got paid, my parents loaded the four of us into the DeSoto and we went to Dick's for burgers.

Welcom Sharon, nice to see multiple Lamys and some Philiasess (Philii?) in your collection.

You sound capable of liftiing up those large barrelled pens with ease; just hope you don't chuck them too! :P

Howdy Sharon and welcome aboard the FPN Choo Choo. If you find the M200 as being too small like I do, then you may like a M600 or M800 series pen from Pelikan. I have admit that the M800 I have is one smooth pen, with great ink flow. However, someday, I want to take the plunge and buy an M1000 for posterity.

Sincerely yours,

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
