Just found the site whilst passing some time surfing the web - so decided to register.

Like most other people I have used fountains pens since I was at school (many years ago now) I have a small collection of fountain pens, some new, some old and some in between.

What worries me though is the number of pens I have had and have lost :(

Just looking on my desk I have the following

  • Black Parker Duofold Maxima
  • Maroon Sheaffer Vacuumatic
  • Grey Tortoiseshell Lacquer Sheaffer Targa
  • Stainless Steel Cross Apogee
  • Blue Mottled Lacquer Parker Sonnet
  • Black Pelikan M1000 with OB nib
  • Pelikan Piccadilly Circus with M nib
  • Stainless Parker 45

and at work I have the following squirrelled away

  • Parker 51
  • Parker 61
  • Cross "Something or other"
  • A couple of "mongrels" which I cannot identify

Regards

Ian

Nice to have you with us Red.

How do you like your Cross Apogee?

I've been eyeing that Barleycorn finish or whatever it's called.

Hello and welcome to FPN! Glad you're here. If you get the time and feel like it, it'd be great to see a photo of your nice collection. See you around.

It's heavier than my other pens but well built. I use it every day - it has red ink in it and I use it to highlight various things. I am not a school teacher though :D

I think I have what you describe as Barleycorn - it is silver metallic with a sort of milled pattern almost like one of those metal nail files.

Yes, I will do that as soon as I can get them all together.

Welcome to the Nuthouse, Ian.

Grab a seat and hope you'll stay a while.

If you do get around to Southpaw's requests for some pics - I wouldn't mind if you concentrate on the Targa ;) .

You can't always get what you want... but if you try sometimes... you just might find... you'll get what you need...

Hi Ian, whereabouts near Southampton are you? I did my degree in Winchester and for the first month I was down there lived in Otterbourne before moving to Winchester itself.

Sounds like you've got quite a nice little collection there already.

Hi, I live in Chandlers Ford so no more than 50m from Otterbourne. I work in Hursley which is the other end of Poles Lane if you can remember Otterbourne at all.

Welcome to FPN, Ian. I spent 3 glorious years in Southampton as an undergraduate :D !

Martin

Hi Martin - thanks for the welcome. My daughter didn't want to move away from home (although we never see her these days) so she went to Southampton Uni. Just about to finish the second year of a Sports Science degree.

Unfortunately she had to have a knee reconstruction op in December so doesn't do much sport these days. She currently wants to be a builder :bonk:

Small world isn't it :D Certainly remember the places you're referring to - I lived just off Poles Lane on Copse Close. Unfortunately I didn't have a car when I was in Otterbourne, so relying on public transport was a nightmare (especially having to get through the M3 roadworks every day as well), so moving to Winchester was a lot more practical, spent a short time at Oliver's Battery before finally settling and spending most of my undergrad days just off Stoney Lane at Weeke. By that time I'd acquired a car as well, so was happily exploring most of Hampshire, Dorset and Sussex in any spare moment I had. I must make the effort to get back to Winchester and I want to know if the very nice bakery and tearoom is still in Stockbridge.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
