Hello from Little Rock, AR

Hello everyone, nice to meet you. I'm not a collector (at least not yet) and I don't really know much about pens, but fountain pens have been my tool of choice for a long time.

I became spoiled by fountain pens when I was a teenager. I've always been the writerly sort, and my grandad encouraged me by giving me his old fountain pens when I was in high school. The only one in working order was a Parker (might have been a 51, not sure, I didn't know pens back then but it did have a hooded nib). I found fountain pens to be more comfortable to write with and to produce better-looking writing than anything else, and was hooked. Unfortunately, the Parker disappeared along the way somewhere along with most of the other pens my grandad gave me. The only one I have left is a Sheaffer Skyboy with a completely rotted-out ink bladder.

Throughout college I used a variety of cheap fountain pens, since I couldn't really afford nice ones. I even found disposable ones at one point, and a plastic < $10 pen that took standard cartridges (I still have that pen for some reason; it's like a bad penny).

I received a Mont Blanc Generation pen as a gift a while back, which got me interested in breaking away from low-end pens. However, the MB is not really something I'd have chosen for myself--too expensive and overdressed for me; when I want a pen I want a tool, not jewelry. Actually, I'm not completely sure that it isn't a fake, but I'll save that for another post.

I just bought a Cross Apogee to use as a nice everyday pen, and I'm very happy with it. Nice pen and although not cheap, it's not too nice or too expensive for everyday use. I love the weight of it, though it's almost too much with the cap posted.

Anyway, I recently found this forum and it's full of information that I'm looking for. Sorry for the length of this post...I tend to get wordy :)

Welcome.

I saw in the last Pendant and/or Pen World magazine that there will be a fall show in Little Rock, September, 16th. They had two in 2005 and I attended both. It's a half day show and is well attended. You should make contact with a couple of those guys and get involved to learn more. They are great guys.

Thanks for the tip. It sounds like a good opportunity to meet people and see some pens I wouldn't otherwise come across, and I wouldn't have known about it if you hadn't told me.

Hello Black Thumb and welcome to FPN! Gotta ask, how'd you pick your user name? Sounds interesting - I have a black thumb, but that just means everything I plant usually dies  . Anyhow, see you around.

Oh don't apologise for your wordiness: it's nice to hear people's stories.

I like the Apogee too. I have the Townsend in discontinued Sienna and am thinking of adding an Apogee in Barleycorn patterned chrome. The one I tried in the shop felt like a solid ballpoint for writing quality and the cap added a weightiness that I think I'd like.

Anyway, welcome aboard.

Well, I have a habit of being careless with my pens and getting ink on my fingers, and I happened to have a nice big black ink stain on my thumb when registering and trying to think up a user name.

It's an apt name for me in the other sense as well. I've yet to find a plant that I can't inadvertently kill. I can keep a kitten alive until it dies of old age, but a cactus is doomed under my care. If a rock had leaves, I could kill it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
