I just received my Pelikan M250 with a F nib. Great pen. Love that clear plastic because I can see the mechanic and amount of ink in it. I don't know much about fountain pen, but for a F nib the line it produces looks very wide. Still, it is a great nib - very smooth and responsive.
Does anyone has any experience with a OB nib for the Pelikan fountain pen? Just want to know how much line variation you get with an OM nib, because I would like to get something modern with good line variation.

I asked a similar question in another thread recently (link below), and it seems that the modern Pelikan oblique nibs don't really give much line variation.

Pelikan oblique nibs

Hi p.f.,

First of all, welcome to our little fountain pen nut house on the digital prairie! biggrin.gif

Regarding your question: if you want a Pelikan nib with line variation, you would have to order one from one of the nibmeisters, like Richard Binder. The line variation a Pelikan OM nib offers doesn't come even close to what we would call a stub nib here. it actually is only a nib with a slightly angled tipping surface, to allow left handed people to write a little easier with fountain pens. IOW, it is an M nib that requires teh pen to be held at a different angle than most people would normally do. With any of the broader nibs, like the OB and the OBB, it is even worse: no line variation whatsoever.

Here is a link to Richard Binder's site: Richard's Nib Page. Other suppliers are Pendemonium: Pendemonium's Custom Nibs, and Richard Mottishaw Richard Mottishaw's nib pages. AfAIK, all of these people allow you to buy a bib from them and have it reground to a shape you like.

I think our own Dillo could probably help you out, too.

Hi Wim,
I haven't used any oblique Pelikan nibs, but I have tried BB nibs on an M800 on several occasions and found that they give decent line variation. Im sure it's not as much as a standard stub from Richard, but definitely more than most other B/BB nibs I have used.
Best regards,
Amin

Thank you for your suggestion.

Another quick question. Is there other modern fountain pen brands that can write with good line variation without breaking my piggy bank?

Hi Pink Floyd,

I recently bought the following stubs:
  • Sheaffer Intrigue from PenHero, stub nib: ***amazing*** line variation; excellent pen!
  • Dani Trio Mikado size Matte Ebonite, stub nib: very good variation, easy to use, nice, nice pen.
  • Stub nib replacement by Pendemonium for my Pelikan M200: excellent stub nib. Fantastic price.
  • Stub replacement nib by Pendemonium for my Namiki/Pilot Vanishing Point: also an exceptional purchase
  • Bexley Tuck-Away with factory stub nib: excellent variation, smooth broad nib.
Beware! Stubs are addictive.

I am one of the guys who bought a Pelikan M200 with OB nib, and I found no line variation whatsoever. The replacement nibs from Pendemonium are excellent at very affordable prices.

I've just thought of an inexpensive way to get line variation with your M250. At the suggestion of another member of this group, I bought a Pelikan 1.0mm calligraphy nib for my M200 from Peter Twydle at the Pen Museum a while back. They only cost £10 (there are other sizes available as well), and they give very dramatic line variation. (It took me a while to get used to holding the nib at the correct angle, though.) Here's the link:

Hello and welcome - great pen you started out with there!

As to Pelikan fine nibs being wide - yes, that's the way Pelikan fines run.

Inexpensive line variation - others have already posted great suggestions - Pendemonium, Binder, and Dillo are all superb choices.
