Are Mont Blanc nibs generally much thicker than Pelikan nibs of the same size?
Also, are their EF nibs too scratchy at all? Thanks!

I find the MB fine to be about the same as Pelikan fine. Come to think of it, all my MB's have fine nibs.
As for the scratchiness of XF nibs, I have never seen an XF that was not a little scratchy. The minute amount of metal on which pressure is be exerted is just too easy to deform. That being said, the two smoothest XF nibs I have seen are a Parker 51 and a Waterman Charleston.

There are two things involved here:
1. The company's quality control
2. The necessary physical problems
The second one is easier. As the nib gets finer, it must always dig into the paper more than a wider nib. Can't be avoided.
As for the first question: I don't know anything about MB's quality control on nibs. My suggestion: If you're going to spend this kind of money on a pen, it isn't much more to get it checked over (and any defects corrected) by one of the well-known people who are in that business.
We all say: That shouldn't be necessary; the pen companies should take care of the pens properly in the first place. Sadly, it doesn't happen. From the best companies, sometimes you will get an excellent pen, sometimes a scratchy or badly formed one.
"How is Mont Blanc's quality control" is not really even a useful question for you. "How is my particular pen" is all that matters.
(Of course, if you get a new one that's truly and obviously defective, send it back immediately and ask for a replacement.)

My MBs are fines, and are generally wider than fines of other brands I own.
If you have smallish writing, I wouldn't go wider than a fine.
Best to test drive obviously.
Chad,
Silkly smooth EFs exist. I have a few and value them highly.

Tried a MB EF in the store and it is scratchy as in pointy to the paper.
Here is a sample of the MB FINE and MED Vs Pelikan FINE.
I noticed that the Proust has a FINE that is more "normal" and definitely finer that my Karajan FINE.

Hi,
My MB pens run the same as my Pelikan Souverän pens, but broader than my Pelikan Tradition pens.
I have three, but I will only count the Generation as the others are Montblanc school pens like the Carrera and Caressa 422.

I have a MB Generation with a true fine nib, but it's not as smooth as my Pelikan M400 fine.
