Full Version: How is the Verve Platinum plated finish?

Cross demands a premium price tag for the finish and bi-color nib of the Verve Platinum. How does this finish perform? Sensitivity for dirt, fingerprints and scratches?
Thanks,
/:) Hans.

I finally got a Cross verve platinum when I saw them on sale. Have to say, I really adore this pen, and I wasn't sure I would. The more I use it the more I like it. The nib is great!

The finish is not shiny, not matte. Somewhat like a brushed finish, but but shinier than a standard brushed finish. I haven't really noticed fingerprints, dirt, etc.

It will pick up scuffs though if you're not reasonably careful with it. I don't post my pens, so I can't comment on that.

I like the pen so much that in my more irrational moments I have wanted to buy another one just like it. And I would, too, if they made one with red details instead of blue...

I just got my Verve Platinum back from Cross after a 9-1/2 week wait for a nib exchange from M to F. They were polite, but boy were they backed up!

Anyway, the pen is great! I haven't noticed fingerprints, etc. -- in fact, I noticed more with my Selenium. The Verve nibs are all made by Namiki, or so I'm told, and I haven't noticed a real difference between this nib and the steel one on the Selenium model.

Frankly, IMO, I don't think the price is worth it for the nib and material upgrade. As mine was free (it was a gift!), I love it and plan to keep it in favor of the Selenium, which I'll sell, but I wouldn't buy it at retail without a very significant discount.

Best regards,
Adam

I am interested in a verve with the gold nib. They are really cool looking and I assume the nib is rather rigid like a modern Waterman Liaison or Edson? How are the widths of these pens? Are they on par with Western widths or are they the Asian 1 size more narrow?
petra
It's really a VERY nice nib. I have the platinum Verve. The nib is a medium and I'd say, yes, it pretty much matches what a "western" expectation of medium would be. And yes, it is on the rigid side.

Noble Savage, you like Broad and stub nibs, yes? You'd want a broad nib for this one, for sure. It's really too bad they don't offer a stub or italic.

I haven't figured out how to describe it yet, but the writing experience with this pen & the integrated nib is really fabulous. At least for me! If they offered this pen with more nib options, I'd order another, without hesitation.

I tried the Verve with the medium nib in a shop the other day, and it felt both wet and broadish, like a Parker Duofold medium, but very smooth.

What slightly bothered me was the weird clip and the fact that the cap doesn't feel very secure when the pen is closed. I never post the cap on fountain pens, so I have nothing to say about that.

Any comments about the clip and cap?

All right! A thread for the Platinum Verve. I'm not alone smile.gif !

I'm finding that after pulling out the Platinum-plated Verve from my front left-hand pocket (which I do), the cap doesn't secure well enough for my tastes -- there's a slight (it's very slight; I'm very particular) opening between the bottom of the cap and where the cap meets the barrel when you put the cap back on. Follow? I mean, I still think this a great pen, but, just a slight that I noticed. Make no mistake, the cap stays on, doesn't fall or snap off if you hold it upside down or as you're writing.

I surmised that cap situation was the result of an anomaly, but, I found the same thing to be true with another Platinum-plated Verve I received as a gift. Like I expressed, a neglectable detail, but, I'm wondering if others noticed.

I really love the Platinum Verve's brushed finish. Question -- in areas where the brushed finish is not apparent, does that mean the nickel plating is showing?

'Nother question (and this is REAL particular, sorry to ask). That jazz radio station promotion that Cross did in . . . New York, was it? When the Verves were released? Any of you manage to get to listen to that? How was it? And that promotion Cross did with the Verve jazz label; were there any ads or inserts in respective CDs? Just asking.

Actually, the cap issue doesn't bother me too much. When my Verve is closed, the cap is actually quite tight, so I suspect it varies from pen to pen. And the posting issue doesn't affect me, as I never post.
The pen itself is quite short, which surprised me, but not to the point of being uncomfortable if not posted.
