Is there an ink out there that is similar to the beautiful saffron color of Buddhist monk's robes?

Any recommendations?

Thanks.

Matt,
Can't answer your question, but I'm interested too.
Btw, what mountain are you standing on and its elevation?
Every carry a fp to high altitude? Which one? Any probs?

I don't have any of these ingredients, so I'm irresponsibly brainstorming these suggestions based on the samples in my copy of Clark's Sampler:

a yellow ink plus a little bit of a true orange or yellow-orange FP ink (excluding the unmixable PR Tangerine Dream, of course), plus a little bit of gray or a tiny bit of black for opacity? The use of black in Noodler's Standard Brown was the inspiration for the gray or black part.

Sailor Jentle Yellow Orange plus a tiny bit of Sailor Jentle Red Brown? This combination sounds the most promising, really.

Edit: The unmixable orange color from Private Reserve is Tangerine Dream, not Orange Crush. Thanks, KCat!

Funny you mention this... I tested my two cross century II, filled with noodler's and aurora inks in planes and in ski lifts in Killington VT. Neither time they leaked. (air had been expelled from the converter before the experiment). Apparently converters are good for that.

My concern about mountains and Fountain Pens is the temperature. Maybe the Noodler's Polar Bear would be more appropiate for that. Then again... when I backpack I do not carry a pen... only pencils.

look for OMAS saffron. It was an LE ink that came out with their "Buddha" pen.

I have to correct because I've made this mistake before also. In fact, I have probably inadvertently perpetuated this here on FPN because I kept confusing the two inks.

It was Tangerine Dream that was unmixable.

Though I did some Orange Crush mixes and found them unpalatable, but they didn't cause any precip.

Hot Bubble Gum, Tangerine Dream, Candy Apple Red - and there may be one other - Baby Lips Pink which I loved but it turned to goo... those are the discontinued PR inks that had problems if combined with other inks.

oh and though I don't really know without a pic what that Saffron color is - is it possible one of the Noodler's inks is very close?

that came to mind - but since I've yet to try it I wasn't sure.

saffron is more yellow, right? Monks sometimes wear orange and sometimes wear yellow... or am I getting things confused...

Noodler's Cayenne looks pretty carrot-red in all the pics I've seen... I was going to suggest Apache Sunset, but now I'm unsure if it's the color of the orange robes you're after, or the saturated yellow color of saffron dyes... That apache sunset looks like it would be nice, but I also noticed that it shades, and looks different depending on the pen and the paper... (Same goes for my Noodler's Golden Brown... sometimes it's yellow, sometimes it's teddy-bear brown... very nice... but a bit unpredictable!!)

Cayenne, Habanero, and Apache Sunset cover the yellow and orange range of the robes (Noodler's standard yellow is so pure a prime color that there is NO hint of orange at ALL in it...that is why it was called simply "yellow"...most people that buy it use it for strengthening a highlighter mix or for mixing their own combinations...though some in Europe have written that they like to write with it too despite its being a true/pure prime yellow).

SwisherPens.com has an eternal with a play on words called "Naval Orange", a prototype ink with a very limited run of 44 bottles that likely won't be produced again (it is bulletproof, but the components became so costly and difficult to obtain that production was never expanded - it was also a very difficult ink to make anyway). It literally looks like somebody stuffed an orange in a bottle the color is so orange...

The reflective properties of a British ink show a tuscan orange, but the dried ink shows a hue that perhaps matches a monk's robe as well (scan below). It is a new Eternal fresh out of the lab.

Thank you all for the great suggestions.

Jeen, the mountain is Mt. Hood in Oregon, around 11,000 feet. I don't take fountain pens with me into the back country. I usually take a Fisher space pen, one of the really small plastic ones. They are lightweight, very small, and very dependable in cold, wet, sometimes dirty conditions. If I did decide to take a fp, I would probably go with my Lamy Safari.

It is true that monk's robes do vary in color from saffron yellow to shades of orange. I like the saffron colored ones.

After checking the writingdesk comparison charts, the three closest matches, in order of closest match, are:

Herbin Amber

Diamine Amber

Conway Orange

The British Tuscan orange swatch that Nathan showed is also good, but where do you get that ink.

Also, does anyone out there have a bottle of OMAS Saffron ink?
