I'm sure I read somewhere that while not "bulletproof" all Noodler's colours are at least waterproof but I can't seem to find now where I read it to confirm it. My favourite ink is PR American Blue but it lifts easily with water. Noodlers La Coloure Royale appears to be a very close match but before I order I would like to confirm its waterfast. I ordered Luxury blue but I'm not happy with the colour once dry. Please advise.
Thanks
zxc
Not all Noodlers Inks are waterproof and I'm pretty sure La Coloure Royale isn't waterproof.

OK Thanks
Thats unfortunate. I was hoping to find some deep blue that was.

In the ink review section there is a pinned thread about water tested inks. The dark, near black, Noodler's colors will survive water.

So will many others that are not near black, but it's a case by case basis. Conversely, all Noodler's dark, near black are not good in terms of water resistance. Again, case by case...

Dig through all the ink reviews that do soak tests and you'll turn up a number that have good water resistance yet are not labeled "Bulletproof", "Eternal", "Contract" etc.

Rob, there are some nice blues that are water proof. I have the following Noodlers/Swishers inks that are waterproof blues:
Tahitian Pearl, which is a blue-black
Gulfstream Blue, which is close to Waterman Florida Blue
Aquamarine Blue, which is brighter and a bit lighter.

Samples can be seen on my ink sampler http://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/in...?showtopic=8474

Someone else has already pointed out that not all Noodler's inks are waterproof and I can add that some are not even very water resistant. However, have you considered mixing an ink?

You could take some colors that are what you like or close to it and mix them together. You could make sure that some component of the mix is a permanent color and then you'll have something left if what you've written gets wet.

There are various recipes for ink mixtures elsewhere on the FPN so you could look at those and see if you like any.

I'm experimenting with blues right now to find a mixture that I really like that has a permenent component to it. Unfortunately, I don't have any PR American Blue so I can't give any direct suggestions for a mix that's near to it, but maybe someone else who mixes inks can. Good luck!

rob7749,
I recently ordered a copy of the Ink Sampler and stumbled across a great list of what Noodler's inks are "bulletproof", "eternal" and just regular inks.

Here's the link: http://www.inksampler.com/

Click on the Inks List button on the left. You'll get a list of the inks in the book.
Scroll down the list until you get to the Noodler's List.
Click on the blue Noodler's link and you'll get the list.

Hope this helps!

I'm sure the list was comprehensive when Greg Clark first posted it, but now it's out of date. (Nathan is hard to keep up with!) Missing from the list of Eternal inks are Verdun Green and Grizzly (a dark brown). It's Naval Orange (not Navajo -- and not navel either biggrin.gif ). (It's also worth noting that all of the eternal inks, except Black and the ones labeled as Pendemonium or Art Brown exclusives, are Chuck Swisher exclusives.) Also missing is the entire line of Swishmix eternal inks (Nile Ebony, Glacier Blue, Lakeshore Spruce, True Rouge, Burgundy, Tahitian Pearl and Seminole Sepia). No mention of Luxury Blue or the recently announced Luxury Hunter Green. No mention, either, of Blue Ghost or any of the Electric colors (Atlantic Salmon, Sunrise, Firefly, Georgia Peach, Hellfire, Lightning Blue, St. Patty's Eire) (the latter group being non-eternal). Did I mention that Nathan is hard to keep up with?

Greg points out that the "bulletproof" descriptor he assigns to Black, Legal Lapis and Legal Blue is his alone. Nathan's own bulletproof designation is reserved for Black and the two "Luxury" inks (and maybe Blue Ghost -- I can't remember). However, Greg's torture tests are extremely informative, and IMO they may be a better indicator of bulletproofness (in real-world terms) than Nathan's (which seem to be more geared to extreme cases of fraudulent tampering). In any case, if Greg says an ink is bulletproof according to his tests, his conclusion carries a lot of weight in my book.

Hope this helps.

Grizzly I understand, as it is a very new item, but Verdun must have been an oversight as it's been out for most of 2005. Also, the exclusion of the Swishmix exclusives is hard to understand and disappointing.

Where I might argue the "bulletproof" classification with Viseguy is that Clark's ascribing the "bulletproof" classification to inks that Nathan doesn't, is NOT based on Nathan's full strength bleach test. For Nathan to use this test as the final say in what he judges as "Bulletproof" indicates that full strength bleach is a tool of the fraud artist when they are pulling out all the stops!

In the absence of the full strength bleach test (where the paper disintegrates leaving ink attached to the celluose itself with which it has bonded as the only survivor) there would be no raison d'être for the "Bulletproof" appellation, thus no structure within which to invoke a new price tier. wink.gif

In fact, for my pedestrian use, anything that Clark evaluates as E or excellent in water and sun resistance or that I have determined by my own testing as E or better, is quite sufficient for my use on anything from checks on down. That said, I still love the fact that what I write with E, Contract, Eternal or Bulletproof inks will last longer than those who write with ordinary inks! laugh.gif

As already mentioned, there are a number of blues that are marketed as waterproof or eternal. Check various websites and especially this forum for samples. But some of the regular dark blues are also water reistant. It seems like blue-black is water resistant, while midnight blue isn't.
