Full Version: Help me pick some inks...

Such a bummer trying to buy PR and Noodler inks long distance. I rely on computer scans, end up being disappointed, and then have to sell them off, again long distance.

OK. So, Burgundy Mist turned out [at least for me] to be kind of a yucky red-brown. But the used, not-full bottle of Plum I just received (which was supposed to be new and full...) is what I thought the Burgundy Mist would be... rich, magenta-like. Great color.
Question 1: What are Noodler Ottoman Rose, Rohrer & Klingner Magenta, and Noodler Saguaro Wine like in comparison with PR Plum?
Question 2: PR Beaver vs. Caran d'Ache Brown.
Question 3: Noodler Turquoise vs. Noodler Ottoman Azure
Question 4: I like Omas Vespucci Red, as a shade, although it always lacked a bit of intensity/saturation for my taste. What are Noodler Tiananmen and Widowmaker like in comparison?
Thanks!
Ray
Eric,

If you'll PM me your address, I will send you a piece of paper with samples of some of the Noodler's colours you mention.

Fountain Pen Inks: A Sampler, by Greg Clark, is a book of hand-swabbed ink samples from a significant portion of the fountain pen inks on the market. I just got a copy for myself, and it's wonderful!

It costs only $45 USD plus international shipping, an amazing value considering the hundreds of hand-swabbed samples, and considering how much it can prevent the wastage of money, energy and time. The website is http://inksampler.com/ (the URL doesn't start with "www"). Dr. Clark accepts PayPal.

It's Noodler's Beaver, isn't it? (Yeah, it is).

Question 3: Noodler Turquoise vs. Noodler Ottoman Azure

These are two completely different inks.

The standard turquiose is closer to blue-green, or an aquamarine. Ottoman Azure, to me, fits in the blue-black realm, it is the darkest of the standard blues produced by Noodlers. (To me, their Blue-black has too much black and looks more like a black-blue)

If I were comparing, I'd call the standard turquoise being closer to Legal Lapis and I would say that Ottoman Azure compares to Quink blue-black.

So that's my SWAG on the topic. roflmho.gif

There's standard Turquoise, and there's Navajo Turquoise. I don't have either one, but from the scans the Navajo looks lighter and brighter than the standard.

Bruce, I agree with you about Noodler's Blue-Black; for me, it's too close to black. Maybe there's not enough blue in it; or maybe the blue element should be brighter. I dunno. A lot of people like it, and it's undeniably vintage-looking, but I prefer straight black or Midnight Blue. I've seen samples of Aircorp Blue-Black, and I think it has more individuality than regular B-B.

I can't say that I see any blue-black in Ottoman Azure. I don't see any black component at all. To my eye it's closer to blue suede. BTW, if you mix Ottoman Azure with some La Couleur Royale, you get a nice sapphire blue. La Couleur Royale is good for toning down the green undertones that are visible in many Noodler's blues.

Really? I thought that Noodler's Midnight Blue was darker than Ottoman Azure.

Both are nice inks and I'm using them both in my ongoing experiment to produce a blue ink that I really like that has shading and which has a permanent component in it. And, yes, these are the non-permanent components of those mixes.

Actually, the standard Noodler's Blue/Black ink looks just like the old Skrip Blue/Black, and other blue/black inks, of my youth. Oh, that was one serious ink color, I can tell you. Report cards and notes to your parents were written in that ink color. I still have some of the former and so I can still compare them.

What seems more like a black/blue, as opposed to a blue/black, to me is Swisher's Swishmix Tahitian Pearl. It's much darker than the Blue/Black and the blue is noticeably blue, as opposed to that sort of green result you get from the classic looking Blue/Black. I'm liking Tahitian Pearl a lot.

Well, the Midnight Blue looks like the Blue-Black that Blue-Back should be.....

O.A. Looks to be a pure blue. to me, anyway. (Same thing with Quink B-B, doesn't really seem to be any black in it at all.)
