Hi to everybody!
I just got a parker "51" from ebay. It is set with a mechanical pencil. Can anybody tell more or less how to date the set?
I payed $78 and hope to have it with me next week. It is supposed to be in mint condition.
Also will like to know, what type of ink should I use and as I first timer Parker "51" user any other details to know to enjoy the pen for years to come.
By the way, my current pen its a tombow havana collection zoom 505 fp. It has been with me for about ten years with no problems at all. I will post a picture soon
Greetings to all

Simon,
I just joined this forum recently as well and I've found a wealth of information here along with some very knowledgeable and nice people.
Here are some sites you may want to check out for more information on the "51". The first one is Richard Binder's site and he regularly posts here.
http://www.richardspens.com/ (look under the reference section).
http://www.vintagepens.com/parker_51.shtmlhttp://www.parker51.com/I have also used the search feature and you can find a lot of interesting posts with lots of information. Just search for Parker 51.

If that set is truly mint, you got quite a deal!

I hope so. I expect it to be a full size and not a demi. But I will have to wait till next week to find out.

It looks to me to be a Navy Grey fullsize set, Judging by the size, the lack of a blind cap, the lack of the circular engraved grip on the pencil, and the short clipped Lustraloy cap, I'd date it to the mid to late 50's. Check for a date code near the word Parker on the barrel, and tell us if the breather hole is on the side, or on the bottom... Either way, great deal, that's one helluva set!

If that set is half as good as it looks, you really got a good deal!
My advice, give the pen a good flush, it is most likely an Aerometric from the 50's and they are pretty robust and straight forward pens. I would fill it with Parker Quink Washable Blue for a while, not because I love the colour, but it does work as you write to clean out the pen. After a while, flush it away and fill it with whatever you desire, they will write with just about any ink.
Just beware that if the sac is still relatively clear, the saturated modern inks will stain it!

It writes quite well. I am very glad and Happy. The nib is fine to medium.
The pen was in mint condition as promised. It is a forest green, full size aereometric version. The breather hole is on the bottom.
I filled it up with my favorite ink: waterman south sea blue.
I haven't been able to date it. But my guess is that from the sixties or seventies.

Simon
