I find it interesting that the only 600 series Bertram's seems to stock in the new 625

I just ordered a Pelikan M605 at clouseout at Altman Luggage for $129 including shipping. Haven't received it yet, but I received email confirmation of the order. Also amber M250 for $79, and white tortoise M400 for $119. Don't know about the last two, but I've been looking for/at M600s and this is the best price I've seen.

Here's Altman's closeout page:

I have been tossing the purchase of that particular pen around for some time.... I think I am going to have to bite the bullet and get it at that price.... right now I have 2 Pel 200 OS Burgundy pens... one with a Binder stub and the other a F nib.... one will have to go if I buy the 605... and I doubt it will be the Binderized.. rolleyes.gif

Be sure to check out Pendimonium. They list the M200 at $55 and the M400 at $155.....

I just purchased a Pelikan M800 from www.cajunpen.com for 272.00. I ordered the pen on Sunday and it arrived at my door Tuesday morning. Lightning fast service which is something that I value greatly.

How is it that we here in England, which I hasten to add is part of the European Union, have to pay over the top for a German, also EU, manufactured prduct. The pen Shop, which is a national UK chain charge £325 for a Pelikan Souverän 1000. Fourtunately I have discovered Niche Pens of Newport Wales who are able to supply the same pen for £234.00 which is still about £30.00 more than you good people (shame about the president) over the pond have to pay. Is this another case of rip off Britain?

No. I am amazed this needs to be explained to europeans as it has been debated for well over two hundred years in their separate nation states. Every european country that I am aware of has the same policy.

1. discourage the internal consumption of personal goods,

2. discourage the import of personal goods,

3. encourage the export of internally value added goods.

Kenneth, why not buy from one of the cheaper US online vendors? Even with shipping I'd think it would have to be considerably cheaper.

Cheaper of course until it reaches the UK at which point you will have to add
  • VAT
  • Import Duty
  • Couriers charge for collecting the aforementioned VAT and Import Duty
At which point you will start to wish you had bought it from Ray Adams at Niche Pens in the first place sad.gif

I think you are sweeping under the carpet some fundamental cultural differences also.

General rule :

In Europe : necessities cheaper than in North America.
In North America : luxuries cheaper than in Europe.

West of the big swimming pool :
- people need to buy necessities, so why not charge the life out of them;
- non-essential luxuries can reach a much wider market thanks to credit/loan addictions.

East of the water feature :
- if necessities go too high, people are in the streets and a government days are counted;
- luxuries are paid usually paid cash and getting a loan for non-essentials that you could not afford otherwise is considered either bad taste or lack of neurons.

Thus different price policies...

But thanks to the global market, I'm hopeful that Europe will soon be as addicted to shopping as the America. biggrin.gif

Denis.

No. Since they are all, as far as I know, popular democracies, the government policy does reflect the popular will which reflects the culture.
