Full Version: senator leak at section

I thought I'd asked about this before but can't find my original post (which could have been on a different forum for all I know.)

I have a Senator Windsor that I use a lot and it has developed very slow seepage at the joint between body and section. there isn't much of a "lip" there for the body to grip onto so I can see how it would happen. (don't worry, Buyer, not the one I'm sending you.) How would *you* fix the leak? Silicone only? CA?

These pens are just plastic

Hi KCat,

I'm certainly not the best person to be trying to answer this question, but if you've got the silicone, try it.

I have used it on a piston filler leaking by the section and it has worked.

Best, Ann

Not CA! CA is hygroscopic and with time breaks down if in contact with a liquid.
If the section can be taken apart, then the perfect solution is to use my rosin based section sealant. IF it does not come off, I would try some shellac.

no, it doesn't come apart. or if it did - it would be a real trick to get it back together I think. there's just not a lot of contact between the section and the barrel to allow for a sealant used in that regard. So. I'll start with silicone and if that doesn't cut it, try shellac. got plenty of both.

the important thing is to get the pen bone dry, i let it stay uncapped for several weeks after giving it a good cleaning. then take a fine paintbrush, and dip it in very diluted shellac. wick the shellac simply by touching the brush to the crack, or rather if the crack is not visible, the interface between the section and the section /barrel threads.

sometimes wicking acetone does the trick but only if the pen happens to be made of celluloid. for plastic, shellac works better.

let dry for several hours, reapply another wicking, and dry for several hours more. after a day or two, try inking the pen. it should be seep-free.
