Full Version: one sad patrician story

i'm vacationing in san diego to visit my daughter, and today we went to ocean beach to check out the antiques shops there (i know, you rarely find any real bargains in these shops anymore, but in between the 18 bids i have going on ebay....). as i expected, the few parkers and eversharps on display were way overpriced, and there wasn't much else to see.... until i came across a gorgeous-looking 1932 onyx patrician (the creamy marbled one with the red ends), with the "waterman" globe seal still crisp on one end, and the gold band looking clean and solid.... the price was, well, no bargain: $435, less 20% for the weekend sale, so about $350--good enough, i thought, for something in its condition. i'm not a big waterman fan (i do love the early ones for their flexible nibs, and have a few) and would sooner splurge on a parker maxima, but this one, i felt, was a reasonable find.... until i had the store clerk take it out for me, only to discover that it had no clip! ack!.... the nib was huge (had to have been a #8, or at least a #6) and the pen looked like it would clean up really well, otherwise, but alas the missing clip was enough to bring me back to earth.... so now at least i have an excuse to go for a consolation prize--like a vac maxima, somewhere out there wink.gif

Hi PM

Any chance you could share a phone number?

350 for a Patrician w/o a clip isn't too bad.
Clips are hard to find but not impossible.

Think Gary makes repro-clips for these.

Key on Onyx is color. Most are evil dark. If great color, that would be nice find.

@david: the color was close to perfect, no staining or browning anywhere i could see.
@luckygrandson: unfortunately, i didn't get the name or the phone number of the place, but it's easily the biggest antiques center in ocean beach, and the pen's in booth #79. good luck!

alas, memory is imperfect and the pen turns out to be a bit more discolored than i originally thought (the cap is stained in parts, but the barrel is largely clean and even). still, from what i gather, a pen well worth preserving. wink.gif

here's a pic of that patrician, cleaned up just a little bit, before it goes to pen haven tomorrow (the nib's big, but it's not THAT big, folks, just a camera lens distortion):

I love it when these things happen!

Looks like a huge, nice pen. Congrats and good luck with the clip!
