Full Version: Where to get a nib

Recently bought a Jinhao Dragon's Descendant pen via isellpens.com, fantastic pen except for the nib it came with (the description on the site describes the pen with a different nib than I received though..?). Worked fine at first, then I got a bit comfortable and used a bit more pressure, that's where it went wrong. Nib buckled like it was made from aluminum foil. I didn't use much at all honestly, I've used more on my old Sheaffers and Parkers with no issues at all. Tried to straighten it out, but it's not the same, now the tines bend and splay with nearly no pressure at all, basically cannot use the pen.

Any chance there's a source an a good looking nib of approximately the same size that will fit this, preferably one that can stand a bit of pressure? I'd prefer a two tone, but will settle for monotone. Doesn't need to "oriental themed". The nib itself is 1 3/8" from point to end, the feed for the nib is a clean 1/4" in diameter for reference.

And unrelated to this for the most part, it appears I've just discovered a wonderful lighting method for taking close up shots laugh.gif

Thanks in advance!

I note that this is an 18k gold nib. Neither Arizona Silhouette or Craft Supplies can help with that. I carry beautiful 18k gold nibs as well as semi-flex steel nibs. Based on the photo, your pen requires the large (size 6) nib. You can see my nibs here.
Let me know if I can be of service to you.

Lou has some great nibs for a great price...

PS, I think you will find that the nib you have there is only 18k plated (As the nib reads 18K gp, which I assume is 18k gold plate)

No, it isn't an 18 Carat nib, it is a steel nib plated with 18 Carat gold (hence the 'GP' for 'Gold Plate').

Nabster: I'm amazed that you had that problem with your pen. I have a Dragon's Descent myself, and I thought it was as tough as old boots. The nib on mine is a Western Medium, but described as an Asian 'Broad'.

It looks as if you've spread the tines quite badly, so can I suggest you look at:
http://www.nibs.com/Article6SmoothingAdjusting.htm or Dr Laurence Oldfield's book on Pen Repair.
If nothing else, working on the nib will be a useful learning experience.

Regards

Richard.

Purchased a replacement nib here for a turned Gentlemen's Pen. Was back up and writing in no time.

I have to say, I was surprised as well, it wrote fine for the first few days, then the next time I picked it up and used just a little pressure it fairly well became useless. I should mention, the picture I posted up there was after I had already tried to fix it. It looked more or less like this before:

Is that the same style nib you have? Disregard the feed and section in these two pictures, the nib is in a different pair than the ones that came with the pen.

For the time being anyway, I've replaced it with a cheapy German iridium nib I had from another pen, though it's not really ideal at all. If I can find a decent one elsewhere I'm game, but putting a $100+ nib on this $25 pen.... won't be doing that.

Ow! That's awful!
The nib is identical to the one in my pen, though the gold coloured plating on yours seems more accurate to the lines than on mine (see http://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/in...showtopic=65339 the photo's not good, but just shows it).

I suspect you were unlucky in your pen, or someone went fencing without your approval.

Richard.
