Hi All,
I suppose you can look up the bio stuff in the 'about me' section or whatever.
Main reason I'm subsribing is that I'm interested in a caligraphy style flexible nib pen, but I want to try before I buy.
(My local Pen Paradise doesn't have much of a selection of Pelikan or OMAS)
Could open a can of worms on whether you can get one now anyway & have questions about two companies that claim they can modify nibs.
So can we discuss flexible nibs here, or do I need to post somewhere else?
Finally, I'm sure some of my questions are probably ultra-faq. Forum have FAQ?
Look forward to chatting with you.
thx!

Thx for replies.
Was lurking on the Pelikan forum & so maybe should post there, but I'm a newbie so forgive is just dash off quick questions
1.) Anyone know "Classic Fountain Pen's" reputation? They have a M605 blue w/silver trim (my fave) for sale. They also claim to be able to customize nibs for max flexibility using "iridium" wire or something. Thoughts on that? I figure if I get the pen & custom for my own unique writing style I can always just get another nib, but I'm not into wasting money either!
2.) Since flexibility is my main concern, also leaning towards OMAS "Emotica" because-- again-- they advertize the titanium nibs are flexible OOTB.
3.) Finally, (and this might sound silly) but in thread about Pelikan nibs (outsourced or not outsourced) a couple of people mentioned someone named Jim. Apparently he must be highly thought of because (paraphrase): "I'd nver buy a pen & have it worked on except through Jim", etc.
thx

Hi and welcome! As re FAQs, take a look at the sub-forum here entitled "Reviews and Articles". Lots of stuff to read there!

Hello, and welcome to the asylum, Bruce. I don't know anything about "Classic Fountain Pens" and their claims, but I suspect that you'll have better luck posting over on the "Writing Instruments" sub-forum. If you have questions about specific makes or models the best places to ask about them would be in the "Brand Focus" sub-forums. In any case, you're bound to get all sorts of information if you hang around long enough.
Take care,
Ron
P.S. For nib work on Pelikans, or almost anything for that matter, Richard Binder has a well-deserved reputation for excellence.

Yes, glad I found this forum. Could probably spend hours and hours reading articles & posts/threads.
Bummer I missed pen show in Dallas, but at least I learned a couple of names. Danny, I take it Susan Wirth is into caligraphy or soft nibs?
Oh, and thanks for the correction Ron. 'Twas indeed "Richard" who was mentioned over at Pelikan forum.
My last question then. I'm fairly new to HTML bordz. (Used to post on use-net until it got infested with mal-ware.)
How might I get in touch with Susan or Richard?
Buying a pricey pen is probably not the smartest thing to do when the economy seems to be in the tank, but I *do* want a pen that can add a personal touch to hand written 'thank you' cards. (I graduate from a masters program in December.)
thx

D'ope! Nevermind. Both Susan & Richard are bookmarked. Bummer I can't be in Toronto or Columbus.
Meantime, decided to take the plunge & get a heavier sterling M725 along with spare 14k fine nib that's been tweaked. (Decided to leave its factory nib untouched.)
So "Woo-Hoo!" Can't wait 'til that bugger gets here!
thx again for the replies. Learned quite a bit today. <g>
As in, "Google before you ask questions dummy!"
cheers,

Hi all,
Thanks for the warm welcome.
I finally received a Pel m625 with an added (f) 14k "flex" nib, and I have to say I'm pretty bummed out.
The "flex nib" seems really wet, and writes about the same width as my waterman "expert" with a stainless medium tip. : 0 !
I *thought* I knew how to use a flexible nib. (My mom actually taught me to write using something she called a "pen-staff", but maybe that's different, or I just have bad habits!)
Any thoughts on where I might go from here? The weight, length, and "feel" of the 625 are great, but the custom nib simply will *not* write as fine a line as I'd hoped.
Open to any suggestions at this point.
thx

Hi, Bruce. The Dallas Pen Show would have been a nice stop for you. Too bad you didn't know of it in time. You'll find most modern nibs don't have much flex right from the dealer. Search on the Market Place forum. Some thing might pop up there or maybe someone, who knows what they are doing, can modify your nib to make it more flexible. Check out FPN and your may be able to solve your problem. Welcome to FPN.

Hi, Bruce. Good to see you here; you're just down the big road a little ways from me.
Other than their limited selection of Pels and Omas, how do you like Paradise Pens?
That seems to be the only B&M store we have here in Austin as well.
Welcome; I'm sure you'll enjoy FPN (I find it addictive, myself).

Was disappointed "pen paradise" did *not* have the Pelikans & Omas I wanted to try.
Ended up ordering a Pel M625 from John. (that one seems to be about the right length and width for small hands - silver gives it a little more weight even tho it looks like its chrome plated & not silver.)
And yes! This site should have some kind of warning lable. Warning: site highly addictive - follow doctor's instructions. Use only as directed.
But what I'm really excited about is I just got a "super needle point" nib from Binder. That *really* frees me up in drawing cartoons!
If I can figure out how, I'll upload a sample done w/Binder nib at Pelikan forum. I think my topic was "M625 & nib oddities."
thx!
