Full Version: Making a pen for my brother

I would like to give my brother a gift for being in my comming wedding (November 1). Something personal, oh say a handmade pen. Problem is, I don't really know anything about making pens, nor do I have the equipment (lathe, etc). Are there any good reliable complete kits available that I could use to assemble a pen (probably RB or BP as I don't think he would use a FP)? Thanks!

are you asking if there are kits where you assemble a pen without having to turn it on a lathe?

Yes. Someday, when time and finances permit, I would like to buy a lathe and try my hand at making pens. But, for now, I would have to settle for a complete kit (body already turned) with only assembly required. Maybe someone could turn a pen for me, and then I could assemble the parts? I don't really know what my options are.

Check out and see if there is a Woodcraft Store in your area.

www.woodcraft.com

They offer penturning courses. You won't have to buy anything, just the cost of the course.

November first? Of 2008? Or 2009?

Not sure you have enough time.

Two options... The first was to look for a Woodcraft as mentioned for a Pen Turning class. Or, you might be able to join http://www.penturners.org/forum/index.php and ask if there is a turner close to you who would be willing to give you a lesson and if you paid for the kit and blank, allow you to keep the pen. I would do this for you, but I have no idea where you live and assume that you are not close enough. If you are, well, heck... I would even give you a kit and blank.
