Good morning,

my friend have a pen that want to sell.

It is a Montblanc rouge et noir gold overlay, and it is in good conditions, the only problem is that don't have the nib and it must be added to a pen. I attached the picture here.

1) I want to know the real value of this pens, someone can help me...??

2) Someone can say me if it is easy to find a nib from the 20' for fit it on the pen..??

3) I have another question, on the barrel (show in the picture) there are engraved "Rouge et Noir - Simplo (Montblanc logo) PAT APPL"... In the past I have see only the write Montblanc and not PAT APPl... what does it means..??

Thank you to all that can help me...

Thank's,

Juri

Hi Juri,

There are some "problems" with this pen:
a.) The overlay is not an official overlay made by the "Simplo Filler Pen Company" (former name of the Montblanc company). It looks like a later added overlay.
b.) The engravement on the barrel doesn't look original either. It should be below the "Rouge et Noir": "Original (logo) Simplo". "Patent applied" in this art of engraving on a barrel I haven't seen befor.

To find a nib for this pen will be difficult as well. Especially as the value of a nib will be higher than the pen.
For me this pen is only of interest as spare parts like the cap top and the inner mechanic.
Sorry to disappoint your friend.

Axel

Nice pen your friend has there. Yeah i do agree with axel that this pen would do a fine replacement part. I'm not sure how much would it cost without a nib, but a recent auction for a functioning pen on ebay had yielded a value of 2kUSD smile.gif

I've been watching this post since it started, and I think the intangibles of value are going to be very much in action for your pen. Given 1) the points Axel made, and they are very good points, and 2) that you need a correct nib that 'could' be valued as much as the pen you ask about, I suspect that the sum of the parts would be worth more than the value of the whole pen.

Perceived value is suspect. eBay values depend on auctions and an auction fever that may or may not affect bidders. I've won pens for less than US$100 that I thought were valued at US$500 or more, and have seen pens that should have sold for US$1500 or more sell for US$300 or less. I suspect that the best values may be seen at pen shows where you have confirmation of legitimacy, and you can do some negotiation or bartering.

Let's say your pen is worth US$1500 in it's current condition and you just happen to find a correct 1920s nib at some Flohmarkt in Hamburg or Bremen and pay another $1500 (as Axel suggests it might cost at a minimum)...do you think you could ever sell this pen for US$3000? I'm not sure. Maybe US$2000? Who knows.

This is a really neat pen and part of pen history, but I think the bottom line is that you have a pen that is rare enough that there really is no market for it in its current condition, and the only way there could/would be a market is if another pen collector decided he needed something like the pen you are asking about, or if the pen were complete.

Good luck in your search and best regards,

Eric

Dear Yuri,

I see your post and I do not agree with the valuation and analysis given here.

Let me give my impression:

1. I need to see more of the overlay, but I have seen several overlays like this in Italy, and they were original.

2. even if not, this is a well kept safetyfiller of the very early Montblanc pens, with a nice smooth overlay.
two possible values - is it a jeweller´s overlay or a Montblanc made overlay.
3. so this is not a bunch of spare parts, with a specialist restoration, the pen will become an interesting pen.
4. The only part needed is the nib. This will be expensive, YES, because you need the very early nib.
5. the imprint under the barrel - It is an original overlay, even the letters inside the star, I have already seen similar in other Imprints of
Rouge Et Noir.

Value?

I cannot give you a value, without the pen in hands,
and there are always two values - the one before restauration and the one after restoration.

Best regards Tom Westerich
